My steps:

drag/drop ".doc" file onto grid, select html pane
drag/drop "pdf" file onto grid, select html pane

In both cases, item link works like windows link, opening exe connected to file type.

Shouldn't I be able to see these file types + others in my HTML pane?

How to configure Internet Explorer to open Office documents in the appropriate Office program instead of in Internet Explorer

(of course, what we're interested is the opposite, but it may still help. If someone finds a better page, please post !)

Thanks Pierre. I guess I wasn't clear in what I wanted
What I thought I could do in IQ was to open rtf, pdf & doc ffles inside my html pane.
Is this not possible?
If so, then how do I implement this please?  Tx.

Yes it is possible to open rtf, pdf, doc, even xls files inside the HTML pane, my PC is set this way. It does depend however, on your OS version, Office version, IE version ...

PDFs open fine here,
but I have the same problem with office type files (doc/rtf/etc ) - even without Office installed (I use Softmaker Office).

I think the solution is there in Pierre's link - well under the fix-it-myself bit - but the first part doesnt work in Windows 7 (from my own attempts and a web search) - they seem to have removed the capability to do this under Vista and windows 7
So, the only solution appears to be to mess around with the registry (part two under the link above). I dont have time/need for that at the moment.

this is similar to the problem with the eml (Thunderbird) files - the trick is to keep the default programme to open the file, but *somehow* allow IE to preview/show it...

MS have a lot to answer for at times....

Well, I tried playing around with file type associations to no avail. Now if someone could tell me how they did it, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

(Simple) Filetype associations do not solve this problem (although you dont say what you tried with them...)

Unfortunately
  1. You have to edit the registry
  2. the solution is not in the link Pierre give

Here is a link for IE 8 - AFAIK you have IE9 but I couldnt find anything specifically for IE9
A new application window opens when you try to view an Office 2010 document in Internet Explorer 7 or in Internet Explorer 8

It could be the same for IE9 -
but I havent even tried it for IE8 yet, so cannot say much about it...

As I said above, this is an MS thing - previously this could be done via GUI, but not since Vista...

Here's what MS recommends from Pierre's link above (here) to *not* open docs in IE
____________________
  1. Open My Computer.
  2. On the Tools menu (or the View menu), click Folder Options (or click Options).
  3. Click the File Types tab.
  4. In the Registered file types list, click the specific Office document type (for example, Microsoft Excel Worksheet), and then click Advanced (or click Edit).
  5. In the Edit File Type dialog box, click to clear the Browse in same window check box (or click to clear the Open Web documents in place check box).
  6. Click OK.

as Pierre says we should be able to reverse step #5, but in Windows 7 I cannot even see the FileTypes tab (step #3).

I have the same problem with XYplorer (file manager) viewer pane as with IQ (IE8):

i.e.

which seems to confirm it's an MS/IE problem (?)
Mind you this was exactly the problem I had with eml files (Thunderbird emails) - must go look see how that one was fixed...

Looking forward to the day Pierre get's the new viewer/editor  :-)
