I find that I am using tagged items to speed up data entry for frequently used items. I am not sure that I am using this as intended because inserting the tagged items actually inserts clones which I do not always want. Editing the items or adding sub items in my new entry is immediately seen in all the others including the tagged items list. Is there a way to detach particular items so they are no longer clones?

I know that I can copy each tagged item from the properties pane and paste it into the outline as a new item, but it becomes clunky since each tag must be copied/pasted individually.

Thank you.

Copy/paste is the only way.

You could :
1- tag your items as you're already doing.
2- Display all tagged items : a- either in the scratch grid (right click in properties pane on the "tagged items" section --> view tagged items) or b- in the "Find" pane/grid (Ctrl+F, then click on the icon right besides the star to show tagged items)
3- select all items and copy + paste them wherever you want.
