I normally only use Full Hierarchy.
Trying to explain the differences between Hierarchy & Full Hierarchy to Jay in the thread Items appear more than once I've ended up very confused myself

With simple source and no filters on
Full Hierarchy shows all sub-items,

My problem is with Hierarchy (without Full Hierarchy):-
  • when Sub-items meet source, only those are shown (no siblings are shown that dont meet source)
  • yet, when no sub-items meet source: all sub-items are shown

is this a feature or a bug or am I misunderstanding something??

It is not considered a bug, but this will probably be changed as it tends to confuse users. It makes sense when Save Item States is Off. With it On it clearly is confusing.

I find it confusing either way myself - I had save items state turned off but was checking out the sub-items - but okay, I see now, it will expand so long as sub-items meet source when you refresh it so long as save item state is off.

There's been lengthy discussions on the matter -- like Context Hiearachy problem.

Personally I don't think it makes sense, whatever the situation is...

it certainly makes it very difficult to explain the hierarchies . . also the whole 'does/should the item meet source or not' is another difficult one to explain but that's also discussed elsewhere.

I think a programme has to adhere to a certain amount of logic in order to make it user friendly
Also I think people really only understand the programme when they start to understand really these things (why items show, and how they show) - if they're not logical it makes it incredibly hard to explain and to understand

Sorry btw - that whole discussion of this sort of went over my head because as said I just stuck to Full Hierarchy ..
