I receive an error when attempting to hide a field currently displayed in a grid. The method I used to produce the error was to open the Displayed Columns dialog box. Then I unchecked the field I wanted to hide. When clicking OK to close the dialog box I get a Visual Studio error and the application shuts down.

I can hide columns by right-clicking the column header and selecting hide.

right click (context menu>

select "Displayed Columns"

I selected one that was checked so it became un-checked

clicked "ok"

no error

I have found that sometimes, little things start to happen for reasons that are beyond me & if I re-start program, they go away.

These sort of events seem to occur if I leave IQ running for a few days.

I don't know the circumstances when this happened on your machine. Clearly it shouldn't happen but I don't think it's a "bug"

Maybe someone else can chime in or can duplicate your error.

After some more testing it seems that the issue is related to a specific IQ database.

I have 5 IQ databases that I have been working with. The problem happens on 2 or them, but does not on the other 3.

Is there a way to perform a validity check on the database or some other verification that all is good? If not, perhaps I can move my data from the existing problematic database into a clean one. Nay ideas?

Repair is the most you can do. I'm very much interested in seeing this. Can you:

Make a copy
Remove all items from the copy
Test that the problem is still there
Send me the file.

I'll then be able to fix it for good !

Ok, in one of the databases that was experiencing the problem I used the the Database Management menu to delete all items. After completing this, everything works fine.

My new dilemma is that the other database that has the problem is my primary database that includes all my valuable data. Is there a way to export the data or transfer it to another database?

I don't think Pierre actually meant for you to actually delete all your data

I think he meant

(1) make a copy of your current dB

(2) Load that dB copy into IQ

(3) Delete the items & send him the dB so he can examine it for issues.

I'm good. As stated before, I had two databases that had the problem. One of those databases I use for experimenting and it has just some random stuff in it - nothing of value. Therefore, if anything is lost from that database - no problem. I then went ahead and deleted all items to see if the suggestions Pierre mentioned would work. It did.

I had tried both repair and compact to see if they had any affect. Neither fixed it.

Now, my other database, the one that has all my valuable data, also suffers from this problem. But, I do not want to take the same approach since I will loose all my data. Since there is something not right about that database I am looking at methods to move the data I need into a good database. This is where any suggestions would be helpful.

My methodology would be

Create a new blank database
systematically move all the data to the new blank database
Delete the bad database and start using the new one

Also, Pierre, would you still like me to send you my file that I cleared all the data from? The delete all items did seem to alleviate the problem.

I think you have to find out what's causing the problem (or I mean Pierre does!)

I'd recommend waiting till Pierre sees your post and see what he says

Vortsg, I think -- for the moment -- you would be better off doing as I suggest. The reason is that if you actually have a problem in your dB, you are only going to transfer it over since you don't know exactly where it is. OTOH, Pierre might be able to find a programming issue that is causing your problem & fix it. Then all you would have to do is to open your dB file in the 'fixed' program & everything would be ok. However, someone else may a more sensible plan for you.

I am comfortable sending you my IQ database as is. There is nothing personal inside and perhaps you can find out something useful from it. How should I go about sending this to you?

Pierre, under "contact us..." it would be helpful if attachments are involved to reference the
betasupport@sqlnotes.net (that is under contact info on the main site). That should be less confusing for forum users, if attachments are involved.

Depending on size:

Dropbox share or other online storage
Zip and email to betasupport@sqlnotes.net

I'll insist, like Tom [Edit : and Jan]

- If you erase anything, do this in a copy (to delete all items : Tools->Database management->Delete all items.

- Then send your emptied copy to Pierre.

This is the easy way.

Trying to move all your stuff to another DB sounds like a nightmare to me. Don't do that unless you and Pierre decide that it's the only solution left.

If you've got a database with this problem, which does not contain any personal stuff, please, please send it over. I'll be able to reproduce it and your "real" database will then work well. No need to export / import, etc.

In case you did delete the items from the 'original' IQBase without making a copy:

find your backups ASAP . By default they're in the same folder as the IQBase file
copy/move them from their location (IQ will overwrite some backups in default setup)
Get back to us!

IN v0.9.25B, I've added a feature where you can select multiple columns, right-click and select hide columns. An alternative, super fast way to hide unwanted columns !
