I would like to suggest adding "New Grid" to the main Grid menu. It was the first place I went to try and create a new grid. The second place was the File menu, but under New there you can only create databases.

I know there's a button for it in the "grid bar" and in the Grid button on the toolbar, but as far as the main menu goes, the Grid menu is the logical place I think. A sub-menu of the View menu is certainly not.

I don't know if it might be worth adding a "New Item" to the Item menu as well?

I was thinking it might be nice to also add some more functionality to the New Grid dialog?

At the moment you get a dialog asking for the name of the grid, and you get a blank grid with that name.

The dialog could ask for the data source (defaulting to the name of course), filter, what fields should be shown, and any other useful options from the Grid Manager.

I know you can just open the Grid Manager to make the changes after, but for a new user who creates his first grids, something a little more 'wizard' like might be helpful. As long as the defaults still produce the blank grid so it doesn't get in the way of the power user who wants just that.

+1, as advanced options ONLY (advanced button to push) . I think that for the beginner, the simpler the better.

Let's also keep in mind that it's so easy to d&D fields from the properties pane, select the filter, etc.
it also depends on how Pierre will "modify the U"I for the new filtering.

+1

There are a few things in the main menus that I would relocate and that's always been one of them.

Looking at it again, I agree the source and filter should be advanced only .. I think the main thing I was after was to have something like the Grid->Displayed columns dialog inside the New Grid dialog, so you could tick off the fields you want in your new grid right there .

Ecco had a "Choose columns" button. Seems appropriate here too.

Agreed on all counts

The reason why the grid manage / add menu is under View, is that the Grid menu is not displayed when not viewing a grid.

So rethinking is definitely required

would it be confusing to show it under both ?
