What would be the ideal UI (user interface) for item (displayed in grids) filtering in IQ ?

More explanations :

you know, when you want to display different items in a grid and need to access the source bar's filter text box, or the column filters, or the date toolbar, the alphanumeric toolbar, etc. ?

Well, the source bar filters are especially confusing for most users as they uses SQL syntax... And when filters add-up it can be hard for the user to understand why some items don't appear and why others do...

So : a more user friendly UI for filtering would be welcome.

Pierre already has ideas, but let's see if we can come up with more great ideas he could integrate...

1- Examples from other applications are welcome (screenshots, etc. since we're talking UI...)
2- Simple changes in what IQ already has available as UI (sometimes, simpler ways are better...)
2- Details would be great...

Thanks to all who contribute! :)

Here are just a few initial thoughts:

I keep thinking that all the filter/sort entities on the source bar should just be a "regular" toolbar, ("Filter/Sort", with the add or remove buttons being able to
turn on/off the individual source bar pieces.

The present sourcebar location would be a nice place for (any) of the toolbars to dock.

Another thing would be to have all the toolbars work well vertically--the date and alpha filter are a little weird vertically, text-wise.

As far as functionality, I recently noticed in Jibz' chm, an extra simple little button showing available options. That concept could be helpful.
