I don't use this feature a lot, so please bear with me. It successfully locates the words I am searching for but no matter how I want to have them displayed (hoisted, new search grid (whatever that is) search grid_, NOTHING happens. I have checked the search grid without the expected results. I am searching for text in all text fields. Wwhat am I doing wrong?

Yes, Fast search is working fine. Can you provide a screenshot of the search result grid (with the sourcebar visible) ?

Thanks

I can't do that now, but I can provide you with more information. I am searching the entire file.

1. Show selected items in a new search grid. Does this mean that IQ sets up an additional search grid? This never works.
2. Show selected items in search grid. This does work.
3. Selected items in current grid as hoisted items. Does not work. I may need more information on this feature because I may be doing something wrong.
4. The shown in grid column does not always display the grid name. I re-do the search and it sometimes displays. Once I scrolled the selections and the grid names appeared.
5. I opened the find dialog with no grids displayed. I click on the drop down giving me the choice of hoist, display in search grid, display in new search grid. IQ crashes.

I've only ever used #1 previously

Quick test:
1 - yes, IQ opens an additional search grid with selected items
2 - [works for you] & works here - through doing this test, I discovered that if you forget to select an item (as I did) it will show all items.
3 - works here
4 - me, I basically ignore this field - there are a few threads about this (probably with suggestions for improvements. e.g. something could be shown in a grid, but only because it is sub-item of an item that meets the source - is it in the grid or not? Here, I think it is NOT shown as being in the grid...)
5 - you've gotten a bug there - exactly as described...

the fact #2 works for you, I presume you're doing it all correctly.

When you say e.g. #1 "never works" - does the new search grid open ? If so is it empty?

Pierre, the GUI is a little odd here - if you actually change the settings (as above) the [Close] button is where the GO button normally would be, e.g. in a search field. I was tempted to click it a few times when I really needed to click on the [Show selected...] again.
It is handy to have it so accessible, but if you want to keep it in the neighbourhood, it would might be better to the left of the [Show selected...] button, or moved a bit at any rate...

Thanks for testing, Tom.

The new search grid NEVER opens. Absolutely nothing happens.

Re: #4. I did not mean to imply that the items were sub items with a debatable origin as you describe. In my case, these are TLIs or first level subs that are clearly assigned to a grid. The proof is that re-doing the search will sometimes show the grid, and I have one experience where scrolling caused the grid to display (previously it was blank). It seems like some kind of refresh problem.

Tested on my other computers. Also tried with the sample database. Same results.

>1. Show selected items in a new search grid. Does this mean that IQ sets up an additional search grid? This never works. I can't reproduce that problem. A new search grid appears when the option is selected + I click on it / press enter. Maybe are you not clicking on it ? I'm pretty sure you would, but I'm trying to figure out why this would happen. >3. Selected items in current grid as hoisted items. Does not work. I may need more information on this feature because I may be doing something wrong. This works perfectly here too. The currently focused grid is where your selected items (from the search dialog) will appear, as "hoisted" items -- if you unhoist the grid it'll come back to its previous state. >4. The shown in grid column does not always display the grid name. I re-do the search and it sometimes displays. Once I scrolled the selections and the grid names appeared. This is a know problem. Grid names are shown only if the items were shown (i.e. they were visible) in the grids when you closed/saved them. Other solutions to prevent the problem (like the home grid concept) have been discussed. I'm not sure if one has been chosen.

Aha! Yes, I was clicking on it, but not pressing enter. This is not apparent to the user. I don't have time to look at this, but isn't this inconsistent with some of the other dialogues? If I remember, there is an auto-close tick box in grid management and a save button. In this case, I would not blame user stupidity, but lack of clarity and consistency. I would not have expected this behavior.

I thought something along these lines was probably happening as it happened to me once with this dialog. :) Normally it should work by clicking too, not just enter. 1- first you select the option with the "arrow button", 2- and then you click on the rectangular text box/button where the option is written. This isn't a super common type of GUI. But I wonder how it could be done differently.

agreed,
I thought this was confusing as well, but I somehow missed out on saying it when it came to post.
I think the GUI should be changed - but what to ?  I'd like a GO button there but then people might think that means Search_GO as opposed to Display-in-grid_GO
Radio buttons maybe? (is that the correct term?) - you'd still need some sort of GO button

It is consistent with filters btw, where, if you select one from the drop-down list, I would expect it to simply work, but one still has to press enter. But there it's more obvious - the filter text is highlighted and can be edited before using.

[edit] just see Armando's post now...

What about a button labeled "Display Selected Items" or some such thing? There are inconsistencies within this grid and this is what caused me to report this as not working. With auto closed checked, I could close the dialogue and have all the found items show up in the search grid. The other two choices (new search grid and hoist) do not respond in this way.

Good suggestion. I've moved it to the far right. In v0.9.25M

I was not able to reproduce the issues, except for #5. Fixed in v0.9.25M
