I note with interest and approval something really good coming up in release 35:

New: WYSIWYG Print Preview: Option to save as a file in PDF, JPG, PNG or EMF format

This will be invaluable to me as I complete my PhD thesis. Since I have made extensive use of InfoQube, I need to be able to get data out of IQ and into Microsoft Word – the software in which I am writing my thesis.

My thesis concerns the personal information management system that underlies the personal working model which each and every one of us possesses – even though for nearly all of us that model is anything but explicit. I expose just a little bit of my thinking in the website www.markrogergregory.net.

Concretely, most of us bring together various components as an ad hoc personal information management system. My thesis consists of a Microsoft Word document, but supported by data from a range of other tools. A Microsoft Word document can include links data from OLE servers such as Microsoft Excel. Currently, I keep some of my personal data in InfoQube but also huge amounts in other tools such as Excel, Word and Microsoft Access. Thus a major element of my current personal information management system PIMS is Microsoft Word documents which include as tables data - but that data is actually stored in Excel and in Access.

Already, the new IQ development will make it possible for me to include bitmapped graphics showing InfoQube grid content and this is excellent news. But this is currently only a static link, and I shall need manually to update all such graphics whenever the data in InfoQube changes and I want to incorporate it back into Microsoft Word. Ideally, a Microsoft Word table would be a dynamic link to an InfoQube grid. This should be either a conventional grid or any other kind of grid, for example, calendar, Gantt chart, map view…

Probably a separate development, but one that I also would hugely welcome, would be to export either a grid hierarchical outline or an HTML view as a Microsoft Word or PowerPoint outline. That would make InfoQube close to PIM heaven! since then you would be able to create in InfoQube and present in standard Microsoft Office tools.

How difficult would it be to make InfoQube an OLE server such that data stored in IQ would dynamically be updated in, specifically, Microsoft Word documents? That would contribute to even greater flexibility. In fact, I would move a great deal of the data which I currently store in Microsoft Excel into InfoQube.

Thanks again for the current development!

Hi Mark

This is great news. Good luck with your thesis, I know how long it can take...

Regarding accessing data from Office applications, have you tried using ODC links ?
  1. You must first make the desired grid visible to other apps (Grid > Properties > Other)
  2. Next, open the grid and do Grid > Create an ODC File
  3. In Excel, do Import Data and select the .odc file you just generated (Data is actually linked, not imported)
  4. Test that the link works, by making a small change to an item in the grid and in Excel, right-click on the data and select Refresh. Changes should show.
  5. Finally, copy a section of the Excel sheet. In Word, do Edit > Paste Special and select Excel Sheet
Now, you'll have dynamic IQ content inside Word !!
BTW, once the Excel object is pasted inside Word, you don't need to keep the Excel file.

HTH !

Dear Pierre

I should just like to confirm that this works. Thanks very much.

Hi Mark,

It would be nice if you could provide a screenshot of the end result. I'm interested to see what you can achieve with that.

Thanks!
