I often have a lot of text in the Item field, and I want to split up that text so that it is contained in a number of items instead of just one item.

I can use the Ctrl+Shift+S split item for each item, and it works, but each split involves moving between items, reactivating the next cell for editing, positioning the cursor.

So I am wondering whether it would be possible to add a "Split Item On" feature, where I would insert a specific character into the block of text that I want to split up, which would act as a "split point".  Then when I ran a Split command, the item would be split in to multiple items.  Each new item would begin where I inserted the "split character".

This way many "split item" functions could be consolidated into one.

I have figured out that I can:
1.  insert line breaks (shift+enter) into the Item text
2. copy the Item Text
3. press Enter to create a new item and move to the new item;
4. press Ctrl-V to paste the text.
5. Infoqube offers to paste each line of the pasted text into a new item, creating items if necessary.
6.  then I can manually delete the "unsplit" item

It would be good to be able to have a function to perform steps 2-6 with one keystroke.

Enhanced split and join commands will be part of v56 !

Thank you Pierre. This has become useful for me too.

Prerel55 - Ctrl+Shift+S "split item" works great when I use it in the Shift+F2 popup editor, but it's still not working exactly right when I use it in in the Item column grid cell.  After I press Ctrl+Shift+S, the text after the split point is placed into a new item immediately below the original item; but the text after the split point remains in the original cell too.  I have to delete the text after the split point in the original cell.

Hi Jim,

I've not been able to reproduce the issue you're reporting...

Works here for both the regular grid editor and the WYSIWYG editor

well, it's working for me too now, both on sample.sndb and my own "main.sndb".  I'll keep an eye out for it and see if I can isolate some circumstance which causes the problem.

Hi Pierre,

The problem I described has continued in prerel56 - but it does not happen in every grid.  I am wondering whether it might have something to do with the number of items in the grid.

For example, I have a "journal - 2015" grid which has an "itemcreated>now-5" filter, and it is currently displaying 340 items.  I have the 'incomplete split' problem in this grid.  And the length of the item does not seem to have any effect.  Even if I am splitting an item that doesn't have a lot of text, the split will not complete properly (as I have described above).

But I have another grid that is currently displaying 40 TLIs, and Ctrl+Shift+S in an item column cell is working OK.

Hi Jim,

I'll look into that specific issue for the next release.
Using v56, have you used the new Item Split dialog ? Do you find it useful ?

Hi Pierre,

i just now discovered the new item split dialog.   It seems that it only appears if the item is not already in edit mode?  I think it will be very useful - particularly when I have a lot of text in one item, and need to split it up into multiple items (i.e. more than 2).  Sometimes I enter a lot of text in a stream of consciousness, and only then go back and determine where the item ought to be split.  Thank you for adding this feature.

Interestingly - the item split properly when I used the new item split dialog, as opposed to just pressing Ctrl+Shift+S with the cursor already at the split point.

Hi Jim,

I was not able to reproduce the issue... but keep an eye open.

In the meantime, ways to help are:
  1. Screen cast
  2. Sample file
  3. Can you reproduce it in the sample app ?

Same problem here. Discovered today and remembered this thread. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
I haven't got the time to try to discover why it happens "inconsistently" (on the surface)

I think I know the cause. Try typing something in the cell before doing split. I'll look into it tomorrow
