Steps:

View > Grids > New Grid

Grid Name dropdown box > select existing field

Click OK button with "Open the New Grid" box checked

New grid opens., populated with items in the selected field

BUT - there is a new empty item at the top of the grid.  ItemCreated field in Properties Pane shows that the item is newly created.
