I'm going to use this thread to report any issues I experience with the new ability to dock grids in any pane.  I'm on version 85a.  So far I've experienced (2) issues.

1. At the moment my Home Page keeps opening new pages in the Home page tab group.  No matter what I try, I can't get it to open tabs in the larger tab group.  I haven't been having this issue with my laptop, but I am with my desktop.  I have 85 on my laptop, 85a on my desktop in case that's the cause.

2. When opening the program I keep finding my rearrangement to be gone and it's like I'm back to some basic stock setting.  I just started using Grid > Save and so far that has stopped it.  IF that is required and why it has stopped happening, IMO IQ should warn a user open close and prompt them to save their grid layout.

Thanks

This doesn't happen here. everything is saved properly. Wonder why.
The panes' positions are saved in the ini file if you're using portable. Tabs main workspace are saved in the DB I think. Pierre can confirm.

Thanks Armando, good to know.

Following up on my last post, it appears if I have my Home Page docked in a "docking pane" (which is how it works best anyhow) that when I click on a grid in it, it opens in the larger tab group (as it should).  The problem was happening when the Home Page was in its own tab group (which is what it was pre version 85), and in that mode grids opened next to it instead of in the next tab.

I think the UI might need a little tweaking in that sense.  Unless I am missing something, View > Home Page should be opening the home page in its own pane, not in a tab group.  I don't know that there is even any reason to have the ability to have it in a tab group any more, seems like it just creates the possibility of this error, but I might be missing something.

FWIW I also just experienced a situation where all the "grab handles" for resizing would not respond.  The only way I was able to get the mouse back in IQ (as opposed to the arrows for adjusting the grab handles) was to go to another program and then back into IQ.  Closing and reopening was the only way though to be able to adjust them again.

BTW, in spite of these small issues I'm having a ball with these new capabilities!

This is a funny one.  There is now a maximize button on all panes.  If I click maximize on my HTML pane, it does nothing to the HTML pane, but makes my home page disappear.  If I click maximize on my Home Page pane, it does nothing to my home page, but makes my HTML pane disappear.

The maximize button is shown when you have two panes, one above the other. Click on the maximize button hides the other pane.

But, it does sometimes get confused and show a maximize button when it should not and then, it hides panes which are not below it. Strange one indeed

Yes, I was modifying the post as you answered, I figured out what it is doing.  Being able to maximize vertically is very cool.  I also just noticed that different types of panes can even be stacked so that each gets a different tab! So cool!

Pierre, FYI I am not sure what is triggering that, but I'm finding it easy to make it happen.  It's happened 3 times so far.

hope it okay to report *my* layout issues here -- this a minor one with home page displaying incorrectly on IQ restart

  • detatch the Home Page
  • dock it on the left
  • set it to auto-hide
  • restart IQ
as you can see from screenshot, even though it is docked on the left, the Home Page is being displayed in the right-hand-side tab group.
Note that this corrects itself as soon as I click on the Home Page docked tab

EDIT// clicking links in Home Page here will open grids in the right-hand tab group (as reported by David below & in OP)
If this display/location bug were fixed, I think the best default location for the Home Page would be docked on the left side. Then linked grids would open in focused tab group.

Hi Tom...of course it's all right, I just didn't want to take it upon myself to call this the "official layouts" thread for everyone :).

I also experienced that issue, and was initially confused by it.  In my case it does not happen every time upon opening, but it did happen somehow because that's what caused my initial post in this thread re: home page issues.

Pierre,

Here are a couple of other issues I have encountered.  I have the HTML pane and the Calendar docked in a pane as shown below.  When using the "Hide Panes" command they disappear off to the side as they should, however they do not reappear when "Hide Panes" is selected again.  That is 100% reproducible.

I also made the mistake of doing some rearranging of the panes and this is often what happens when I drag the calendar onto the pane.  Might be as simple as resizing it to a larger size before detaching and dragging.
