How do I find the location of a file linked in InfoQube?

Can't find the information in any of the dialogues nor anything about it in the manual.

I don't want to launch the file; I want to know where it's located in the file manager.

Seems like this info should be available in the Hyperlink dialogue.  Or add it in the info pop-up window (along with my other suggested improvements - ha).

As I said, I'm not asking how to link to a file, I'm asking how to find a file that I'm linked to.   I'm looking for the file path so I access it to change the file name.

Obviously, I can find it in other ways.  Just seems like the path info should be available in the InfoQube link.

When I create a link in my file manager, I can right-click on it and see the target location, ie where the target file is located.  That's what I'm looking for in InfoQube.

If I create a link manually by pasting the path in the URL box of the hyperlink dialogue, that information IS preserved, which is what I want.  But when I create the link by dragging a file to InfoQube, it just puts "[URL]" in that spot, which doesn't tell me anything about where the file is.

Please provide a screenshot as I'm not sure I follow you...

But:

  1. Are you linking to the file or a shortcut to the file ? (see the Add file dialog)
  2. If you're saving the link as a dynamic link to the URL field (from what your wrote, I think this is the case) then the file location is shown on the status bar (hovering the link) and the URL field gives the file path (Properties pane > Values)
(perhaps do not use a dynamic link if this is confusing for you. A static link will be hard-coded in the hyperlink)

Go to Tools > Manage Fields and make sure that the Hide in Info Pane box is unchecked for the following fields: URL, FilePath, FileName, FullFileName.  That way you'll be able to see the path to the linked file in the Values section of the Properties pane - if the file is linked through one of those fields.

There is a field called "URLLink" which just shows "Link" if there is something in the URL field, which is sort of like the "URL" display that you mentioned.

URLLink is not a system field. See this page which describes how to create it: Smart Fields

w.r.t. to your original question, do you now see the file path (in the Properties pane, Values section under field URL) ?

I haven't had a chance to go thru the link options yet.

Right now, the path isn't shown anywhere that I can find.  The properties pane shows the path to the InfoQube shortcut, not the target file.  The status bar doesn't show the path, either.  It just displays the parent/child chain.

I'll make whatever changes I need to make to the type of link I'm using so I can see the path.  It just seems like that information should be available no matter what type of link you're using.  A link should have the target path info readily available, which I am unable to find.  Where I'm being told to look shows either "URL" or the InfoQube shortcut path.  Nothing shows the file path, unless I'm completely missing it.

You may want to try this to see if it helps.  Hold down CTRL while you drag a file to Infoqube.  Then you should see the Add File dialog:

add file dialog

I check the box "Show this dialog when dropping files" so that I will always see it when I drop files.  Select "Static" or "Dynamic" if you want a hyperlink to appear in the Item field (instead of just the text "(link)").  If you check the File Path and File Name boxes, the location of the linked file will be shown in the hyperlink text in the Item field.  You probably should select "Actual file" radio button.  Also, under Link Storage, you may want to select "File Link fields" instead of URL field.  Then click OK to create the link.

Hi Wayne,

I've said it before, but if you want us to help you, you must do your share and provide a screenshot of the dialog so we know how the link was created (if FF does not work, you can use Edge / Chrome)

From reading this conversation again, it seems that this is what you choose:

And indeed, with these settings, the shortcut is not resolved on the status bar. I'll fix it
(if the link storage is File link fields, then the shortcut is resolved, so it should be an easy fix)

You may want to consider using the File link fields instead of the URL field, as they are easier to handle and better supported in IQ

I could also show the target file in the Hyperlink dialog. I've added it to the wish list
