I just discovered the View > History > Back and Forward commands and I'd like to understand what they do and don't do.  Last night I used the Back key (Ctrl+Shift+left) repeatedly to see what it does, along with the Forward key (Ctrl+Shift+right)

So far I can see that they move the focus from item to item within the same open grid.  Also they can change the current grid and focus on an item in the previously / subsequently viewed grid.  Will these commands reopen a closed grid?

I did not see any panes (Properties, Doc) get activated, so I'm guessing Back and Forward don't do that.   The focus stayed in the grids.

I did reached a point where the Forward key did not work and I could not use it to return to the view and item where was before.   At that point I noticed that there were three or four open instances of my "Main" grid.  So I'm wondering whether the Back key opened those additional instances.
