For better or worse, I primarily organize info by assigning items to multiple parents.  This creates the never-ending problem of checking to see if an item has been assigned yet, and which parents it has been assigned to.

1) Checking properties pane is too many steps.

2) Parents column in grid only shows one parent.

3) Parents field in the forms pane cuts off the list.

4) Pop up text info cannot be customized. (previously suggested:  https://infoqubeim.com/drupal5/node/5227)

5) Empty space at top of grid and window cannot be customized to show info. (would love to be able to use this prime unused space)

I'm probably missing some function that can do this already.  Any suggestions?

Hi Wayne,

Indeed, IQ wasn't designed to be used the way you use it. Meaning that if multiple parents are allowed (a rare thing in outliners), it isn't encouraged. The UI isn't optimized. I'm not letting you down, just stating the fact. Any particular reason why you're using this instead of fields or tags?

Now, there are a number of small improvements that could be made...

  1. Grid: Parents column: Lists all parents, one per line
  2. Toolbars: Add Parents toolbar
  3. Panes: Add a Parents pane
  4. Properties pane: They are already listed. I'm not sure why you find this is not effective, but if you see a way to improve it, tell me
  5. More Info pane: Parents could be listed there
  6. Customize popup info (as you suggested)
  7. Status bar: Add an option to list all parents

If I was to add one, which one would suit you best?

Pierre,

I started using multiple parents before tags existed.  I know most outliners don't have this, which is one of the major reasons I prefer InfoQube.  I tried tags when they became available but found the way they worked didn't allow me to accomplish what I wanted, so I continued with multiple parents.  That was years ago and can't describe the issues off the top of my head.  I don't see how fields would accomplish the same thing as multiple parents.

There's nothing wrong with the properties pane.  With my set up, it takes 2-3 steps to see the parent info.

I'd pick #6 of your options primarily because I think it'd be used widely by others, as well.

In the meantime, I'll re-visit tags.

Thanks, Wayne

How do I ?
