The process of creating a hyperlink to another item is too long. It should be as simple as alt-drag & drop (to use windows explorer mouse-keyboard combination).

The hyperlink dialog could appear but it should be optional. The item text should maybe be the few word of the linked item.

But I'm not 100% clear what you mean. Is it something like this:

e.g.
Item1   Item text = 'Sunnyside'
Item2   Item text = 'Rainy day'

Alt+Drag Item2 to Item1 - what exactly do you want to happen ? - do you want link to be appended to number 1's Item field (or do you want a choice of fields?)
Item1 text could become: 'Sunnyside Rainy day'  where Rainyday is the link

See also thread Request: "create link for this item (+ copy to clipboard)" in context menu for thoughts on problems with copying the text from an item which already is a link (and/or problems with current copy which copies all html code)

Hi Tom,

What I was thinking is that it would create a new item containing the link, not append the data to the other item. But it follow exactly the seame behaviour as other drag & drop operations :

Drag item  :
1- if it's dragged & dropped on top of another item,it creates a sub (usual behaviour) that's a link.
2- if it's dragged & dropped between items, it creates a sibbling that's a link.

The idea behind that is that we already have the possibility to insert hyperlinks using the "insert hyperlink" dialog, so this would allow to create independent items which contain hyperlinks (à la explorer).

I know Pierre has some plans for linking etc. Maybe he'll chime in.

Also note that this is more or less already implement when dragging files from explorer to IQ.

gotcha
yes, good idea !

this still relevant if wanting to use text from linked item - if there's html content there:-

mantis :

0959 Alt-Drag & Drop item would automatically create a hyperlink to the D&D item... at the dropped location
