Situation
 
Every day there is a datebook that is published in my local paper
Every day I want to check it out
I want to set a pop up reminder to do so
The only way to set a reminder is through the calendar
The calendar doesn't seem to take usable links
 
I do know I can set up a grid of reminders, due dates, priorities, etc

True, but calendar entries are just items, so if you add the web page URL to a field, say the URL field, you can click it in the Properties pane
