There's a recurring problem with URLs not working in the site - does  anyone know exactly why this happens and how it can be corrected?

1) one thing that happens is:

the link looks okay - but when I click it, instead of getting e.g.
I get
-
the 'drupal5 is stripped out, resulting in a 404 cant be found error

2) Another problem is the page simply says:
You do not have access to view this node

this may have been resolved elsewhere but I found it difficult to narrow down the search

Currently an example of both can be seen in the first post in this thread Backup - Backing up IQbase. I dont know is this a 'permanent' problem (i.e. related to how the link was made) or does it depend on something to do with the site

I'm not able to view any of the 2 issues, whether logged as admin or as a visitor (i.e. not logged in)

Strange...

Yes, it's strange, but it does happen. I haven't been able to nail it down.

Do you mean that both links in the first post in Backup - Backing up IQbase (node:1845) show and work for you ? (the links are in the first two lines)

EDIT/  I'll try emptying my cache & try with another browser and see how I get on. I'm using FF but cant see that it could be a browser problem...
