Hi there,
I have been using IQ since 2007 and though there has been lots of progress in terms of development (thank you for all your work Pierre!), there are a few things that keep me from using IQ for fairly everything (which I really would like to do). With the calendar soon being fully implemented (especially regarding the google sync feature), I will be able to retire my Outlook. However, there are more - in my view - crucial points which would enable IQ to be much more useful than it already is.
I would be grateful if you comment on those points. Perhaps some of my wishes are not so important in your view, perhaps some of them are already implemented and I do not know how to use them...
1. File links / attachments
1. File links / attachments
Mostly I use IQ for writing texts, which in many cases are referring to excel sheets or process graphs (Visio). Usually after completing a topic, I export my outline from IQ into Word where I try to embed the Excel or Visio files.
I know you can link files to the outline in IQ. However it would be great if you could generate Word files from the outline integrating such linked Excel/Visio files.
2. Favorites
My grids have grown large, and I often want to jump from one item to another one far away. In those cases, it would be great if one could define certain "favorite" items which show up in the status bar. If you click on those items (or symbols) in the status bar, you would immediately jump to the defined position in the grid.
This solution is implemented in Info Select, which I used a few years ago. Info Select in many aspects does not offer the same level of functionality or flexibility as IQ, but in this point I believe IQ can improve.
3. Improved Search
Search has improved a lot recently. However, if you find the item you were looking for, you can choose whether to show the found item in the "Search grid" or the current grid.
I would expect the option to show the found item in one of the grids where it is shown. Example: The item "Contact ABC" is shown in the grids "Job", "Private" and "Contacts". I would expect the Search window to ask me whether I would like to jump to the item in the grid "Job", "Private" or "Contacts", and I would like to jump to the position where the item is shown, seeing all other items as well so I can navigate in the grid normally (when I use the word "shown" I am referring to all items, closed or opened).
4. Shortcuts enhancement
Currently the "is Done" field can be triggered via a pre-defined shortcut (Ctrl-M). It would be great if you could define customized shortcuts for other individual fields (such as jump to the date field, trigger the todo field, etc).
5. Email integration
I already mentioned Info Select. In Info Select, Email functionality is integrated. You can define contacts for whom you can synchronize the emails with your email account. The emails are then downloaded as sub-level-items into the grid, the email text is shown as HTML.
The advantage of this integration into IQ would be that emails could be allocated to the right items in the outline automatically and you would not have to manually put emails to the corresponding items in your outline.
I know this Email integration probably requires lots of effort. However, I feel that having emails separately and all the other information in IQ in the long run is not an optimal solution.
6. Gantt enhancement
It would be great if one could associate certain item properties to colours of the gantt bars. Example: All items for which the "Who" field has the value "Tom" should appear in blue...
7. Potential use of linux build for mobile phones?
Finally, regarding the recent success in programming a Linux version, I am asking myself whether this could also be useful for using IQ in Linux-based mobile phones. Does anybody has any idea or experience on this?
That's it for now! I hope that those points will provoke some discussion and ideas. In any case, thank you for reading!!
Best regards
Thorsten
