Well, this is embarassing. I clicked on something and deleted the vertical (turn your head on its side) list of grids. I figured this was a setting somewhere under "View" menu, but don't see where. I'm sure there's a simple answer.

Toolbars are often docked context menus, "teared off and docked" submenus, etc.

Ok, I found it, probably just my brain stuck in Win 95 mode. I went to View -> Grids, and then tore off the list of grids and dragged and dropped it back on the left edge.
