from forums (using BB code) I'm used to the idea of having a "hyperlink text" = the text to which you want to add a link.
I agree with your request for a simple (preferably no-questions-asked) method to copy a link from an item's context menu.
Re the link showing in the scratch grid - you've got to remember that IQ is a database, and that the grids are a display of the items - i.e. one item could be in multiple grids. An item could be "normally" in a grid but filtered out.... So it's not as simple as in ToDoList at any rate.
I wonder could the link tell IQ to show the item in a particular grid, if possible (a question for Pierre I guess?). There is the idea of an item having a home grid, but I'm not even sure if that has been implemented.
EDIT/ -- link to nonexistent node ID 1932 -- - "Home Grid" has to be applied manually I think (??) - if this could somehow be automatically applied (with a manual "override") it could possibly be added to the link
Thanks for your reply. MyInfo is also a database, has user defined fields, it can clone, and it does Copy as a hyperlink (which they call Copy to this document...and they have another called Copy to this paragraph). I guess we need Pierre to comment on how difficult it would be to do this in IQ.I used MindManager for many years and really used this feature a lot in that app. I'm trying to get weened off of MindManager and get on over to IQ, but I really miss this feature.
This (these) feature(s) has(ve) been requested before. Maybe not exactly with the same words, but similar. A search for "hyperlink" in Mantis brought those four related suggestions :
Drag drop from Outlook : create hyperlink (semi)automatically -- like for "external files" drag-drop

Pierre will certainly comment, but since 1032 can already be done to a big extent (hyperlinks to items, grids, etc. can already be easily created), I don't see why it would be hard to implement.
As to 0212, one can see that its implementation was already planned for December. It just slipped behind.
Now, what could be added to these features requests is : integrate them to the UI (e.g.: item and grid context menus)

Amando,
As always...thanks so much for your help!! And, I think you may be right...much of what I want in hyperlinks may already be in the mill. However, can already be easily created in the statement above escapes me. If you are talking about ways to create hyperlinks with the box below, then I am in the same place I was with Copy & Paste. That is I am totally bamboozled . I have spent hours and hours trying to figure this thing out by studying the user manual. I've gotten nowhere. I suppose like Copy and Paste, now that I know how to do it, and I am aware of the related clone bug and a couple of other bugs, it's not that difficult to do a Copy and Paste. But now as a new user (sort of), to me the below dialog box is deathly...it is driving me nuts!!!
While I truly don't find the above dialog to hard to understand, I agree that it's not very "intuitive" or "friendly". What I meant by "easily created" is that it's already technically easily feasible .
I'm sure there are less "geeky" ways to implement the same functions, and it would be good to make the appropriate changes if necessary.
I think the idea to - copy/paste a hyperlink of an item via it's context menu - should still be added to Mantis.
I mean a no-questions-asked link that gets pasted using as text e.g. the first 10 letters in the item field (that would have to be without html code) or maybe just with the item's ID number
The problem is that the "copy as hyperlink" here (In context menu), even if sexier, is more or less only replacing the "create hyperlink" option already there in IQ. Nothing replaces the current dialog with its options (create a WikiTag hyperlink, create a grid hyperlink, create an item hyperlink, create a URL hyperlink, create a file hyperlink, create an outlook hyperlink...). So it's a bit like comparing a screwdriver with a multipurpose drill.
To create all those other hyperlinks (which I use a lot, except for WikiTag and fields), what would you do ? What should replace the current dialog (paste as hyperlink isn't enough)?
One solution, maybe, would be that IQ would offer the option to copy as hyperlink when one right clicks on : WikiTags, grid tabs (and in grid menu too), fields, etc. And so, these could be pasted as hyperlink after. But does that offer the same flexibility? Not sure.
As for the creation of hyperlinks which can be pasted outside the DB, pointing to items in the DB... this is also something else.
I'm sorry, I cannot answer your question. I cannot figure out how this function works well enough to even comment. I can do one or two things with it, but for the most part I remain illiterate on this function.
And, I am back to my original question now and need some help.
you figured out the second option I wanted to explain (see asterix below*) and - the answer is yes - at the moment it's the Scratch pad grid.

Hi Dave
I can only explain with words at the moment - and only part of what you want can be done at the moment
1) if you know what item you want to link to and it's easily accessible -
check in the properties pane for it's ID number (ID Item)
go to where you want to create the link
so far you've been using the html pane - so click on the link icon in the toolbar or the context menu
add the item ID in the dialogue box (in the lower field)
NOW: you have to decide what text is actually used in the link - in your ToDoList example it's tdl//:1 here you have to decide what to call the link - this has the advantage of being more helpful than a number - say the item is about "Raven Maps" (I was just looking at them) - you can add that text to the upper field in the dialogue box
Look I'll try installing Jing and see can I do a screencast, but I hope that if you go through that list above that you'll be able to figure it out.
* The other option I wanted to explain is to just click on the link icon and then search for an item
Currently AFAIK the only option when link is clicked is to show the item in the scratch grid - see what Pierre says about this. I believe the calender is the focus for a while now so this may have to wait but as I say - see what Pierre says.

As far as hyperlinks go, 2 things I'd like to add:
- if you selected a cell or text in a cell before hitting ctrl+k (or clicking on "hyperlink"), you don't need to enter any text to be used in the link. It'll be automatically filled up for you.
- If a link points to an item already displayed in the currently focused grid, the scratch grid won't open -- the focus will just jump to the linked item in the grid.
Alternatives, suggestions for improvement :
- Simple : it might be possible to have the focus jump to another item in an already opened grid, when that is the case. That would be better than opening the scratch grid.
- More sophisticated : If the "home grid" concept was slightly expanded (it's been discussed before), clicking on a link to an item which isn't shown in any currently opened grid could trigger a dialog offering to...:
1-Show the item in its "home grid" (the original context in which a specific item should be displayed)
2- Show the item in one the grid where it's currently shown (like the "quick search" dialog, i.e.: "shown in" column)
3- Show it in the scratch grid.
Also, it could be that clicking with a specific key modifier (alt?) )would always open this dialog, even if the linked item can be found in the currently focussed grid.

Good ideas!
might be more complicated to have a tickbox to make it "always do this action" - (then maybe using the qualifier key would show the dialogue again)

I thought this was always the case - but doesnt seem to be if the link is in the html pane
Thanks again for all your work on this. You guys are so committed it is unbelievable. I'm going to butt out at this point, as I don't yet know IQ well enough to make meaningful suggestions on the refinements you are discussing.

Sure, I'm all for it. The copy as hyperlink feature is one that I'd really like -- and as a context menu item, it would be fine.
(I was just pointing out that it's been mentioned and discussed before, so that we don't run in circles.)

Alt-Drag & Drop item would automatically create a hyperlink to the D&D item... at the dropped location
