How to create link to a "png" type file - Is it possible?

Submitted by jan_rifkinson on 2012/08/21 12:35
When I drag / drop from file location to IQ, IQ creates a link type "lnk" which doesn't / won't associate to file type (default = windows photo viewer) so nothing happens. Any ideas anyone? Thanks.

Here, pngs open as expected in the photo viewer.
I even changed the default handler (as I dont normally use the photo viewer) and that works now

Do pngs open properly from explorer there?

Yes, png opens from explorer. What are your settings in link dialog? Can you clip & insert in your answer. Thanks, Tom.

Here's my settings:

does it work if you add it as a file - as opposed to creating the shortcut?
EDIT / that would indicate a problem with the shortcuts somehow -
if you find the actual shortcut in the IQ folder, you could check that out - see if it works directly.

Tom, thanks for reply.
I can set up as a static hyperlink so it shows up in HTML pane just fine
I can set it up so png appears as an item in the outline
so it appears to be a linking problem which I can't figure out.
I'm not sure what you mean by set it up as a file as opposed to a shortcut

Here's what I get when I duplicate your set up & try any other combo except static / HTML pane

This looks like it might be a problem with file type associations, so I checked that & it's ok

Yeah,
it looks like the problem is with the .lnk extension. I've no idea how shortcut files work...

When I say save png-item-link as a file, I mean untick the option in top right of my screenshot above.

That's what I thought you meant. And yes, that works -- as I can add the file as an item in the outline but that's not very practical in this case.

I have no experience with linking in the html pane...

If you uncheck "create shortcut" does it work correctly ?

Windows handles de-referencing shortcuts to open the corresponding file automatically.

What is the full path of the .png file ?

FWIW he does say it works in the outline if "create shortcut" deselected.
