POP3 emails not showing [bug]

Submitted by Airways on 2012/10/20 14:37
Hey Guys, I am setting up a mailbox to deliver Notes to my IQ database. I have the email options all setup, and when clicking Check for New POP3 Email menu item, the tray icon flashes with the number of unread messages, however no messages are shown in my Emails grid! I'll attach a screen shot showing the grid's settings and the tray indicator.

Hi Airways.

I don't use IQ to manage emails, so I can't directly help.
A couple questions, however :

- Did you create that emails grid yourself ? I don't think it's part of the sample grids provided, but i could be mistaken.
- Did you try "searching" for those emails using either  1- the provided "journal" grid (you can filter by date using the Date toolbar),  2- any grid without a source or filter (could be the Search grid or the Scratch grid, after making sure all filters and source are erased, in the source bar (ALT+S)  -- this can be done safely in those grids), 3- or the quick search or find grid (CTRL+F : type some content you,re looking for).

Basically, if your emails are really in the IQ DB, you'll need a grid with the proper source to be able to display them. By finding those downloaded emails and looking at their properties in the properties pane (F4), you should be able to create a grid with the right source (which will be a field -- could be email... don't know.). This grid creation/modification business can all be done in the Grid management "dialog".

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the tips. I read that the Emails field would be set for any imported messages, and that you must make this grid to see messages. After removing the filters from the search grid I am still unable to find the messages, so I believe there is something in the setup that I missed - or perhaps a bug? Clearly IQ is getting the messages, just not doing anything with them.

Sorry you weren't able to fix your issue. Lets wait for Pierre, then.
(You're right -- i just checked the help file. The "emails" field should be checked, at least when importing from Thunderbird. So the only thing you need to do is setting up a grid with "emails" as the source ; which you probably did.)

Yep. I also haven't seen any _files directory containing anything, and running my IQ Gadget tool to query the text table directly shows only items I've created manually - none of the items I've emailed to the mailbox I have IQ checking have appeared in the DB as far as I can tell (although my tool is very new, so it's possible that I've done something wrong in that query, I'm pretty sure at least the Subject lines of the messages should show up as text values in the DB). Suppose I'll have to wait for Pierre. I certainly hope he gets back soon!

Airways, I use gmail so I looked at their settings & tried to set up a pop account myself to no avail.

The Gmail settings are here support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py
and there you will notice that certain requirements are not accounted for in the Option settings, ex SSL & port # for pop3

I would think that could be a problem.

I'm using a mailbox hosted by DreamHost, and since IQ is able to detect the messages after logging in (the message count in the status bar matches the number of unread messages in the mailbox)  I'm fairly certain the connection is working correctly.

Yup. Well, that's a start. I will be interested to see what Pierre has to say on the subject. Looks like IQ/Gmail connex isn't even close

Airways,

I do use the email grid but not the way you do, i.e. I use the TB extension to copy specific emails to IQ. (you might try that) The copied msgs do show up in the grid & the body is revealed in the HTML pane.

HOWEVER, I just noticed that the linkage of the emails so the body shows up in the HTML pane is broken.  However, IQ does opens the email in the native client.

So while I know the email grid, per se, works, I do suspect that some linking issue changed in the latest betas. Even though we are using the email grid differently, I think this is in part the issue you are encountering.

Armando is right -- this is a matter for Pierre -- who I believe stated that he would be away for a few days.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

 Hi Jan,

Can you think of anything with the setup of the Emails grid that I might have missed? I simply created a regular grid, and ensured that it is pointed at the Emails field as the source (ID 85 I believe). Is there anything else you had to do to get the Emails grid to work properly, aside from setup the Thunderbird extension?

The reason I am using the built in POP3 mail checker is that since there is not currently any mobile device syncing, I want a email address I can quickly send items to on my phone, which wil lbe imported and created as items in my Inbox grid (I'd add the Emails field to it's source) in IQ. Just enough to get something into the list so I don't forget it (I have the worst memory). So because of that the usage is pretty different from using a extension in a mail client... although I should probably test one to see if I can get that to work, to narrow down the issue.

Hi Airways,
I think you are the first person ever to try using the email this way (great idea btw) - I did a search here and the only threads were people using it to *send* email.
It worked for some people and didnt for others - at the time it was not a priority and hasn't been revisited since...

I occasionally save email to the database in the same way as Jan (from Thunderbird using the IQ extension):
(with Thunderbird) the emails get stored as eml files (with item number as filename) in a subfolder of my database folder with the name thus:
<filename>.sndb.files

The emails show in the grid with the subject line in the 'Item' field - and the content can be read in the html pane.
Sounds like you have the email grid done correctly, (so I suspect this mught be a bug somwhere).

To double-check the items' existence -or not-
you could search for something in the subject line.

 Hey Tom,

No luck at all, I don't see any directories with names like that inside my database directory, nor can I find the items by using the Find command / Search grid.

It appears to me that your IQ setup is ok. The idea makes sense. The only thing left is the connection information in the IQ email setup. Is it possible something is amiss in that area? If everything is set correctly, then Tom's comment about a bug would be logical. I think Pierre will have to get into this. Please let me know what happens as I think you've got a neat idea which never even occurred to me.

10/23/12  update: Missed the following from your reply to Armando "Clearly IQ is getting the messages, just not doing anything with them."

If you are sure iq is rcvg the msg, try this:

Create a journal view.
source everything
no filters.
All the items in your dB should show up, including your emails

Select one of those emails & check the properties to see if "Emails" is checked off. If not, that might be a clue

Hey Jan, thanks for helping me try to figure this out.

I set the source dropdown in the Source bar on my Journal grid to (All Items), and disabled the filters, but it doesn't look like the items exist in the DB. All very odd, it's as if IQ knew the emails exist, but it isn't actually attempting to import them.

If the emails existed in the dB I would think they would have appeared in the journal view since that grid displays ALL items & email is an item. I have a feeling they are not in the dB at all which leads me back to the pop3 settings or some bug in IQ. Pierre will have to get into it, I'm afraid. I don't know what else I can offer at this time. There are, however, far more experienced users than I am on this forum & maybe one of them can / will chime in with another angle. Sooner or later it will get worked out to be sure. IQ is a helluva program & I hope you stick with it.
