As discussed on other threads, I've been pasting images into the HTML pane using FS Capture. This is handy when taking notes where the source material has tables, graphs, etc. It's nice to be able to immediately see the image inside InfoQube rather than creating a link that launches the graphic in another program.

I'm concerned about whether this approach is viable in the long run. I'd appreciate any opinions on this.

1) Is pasting a lot of images into InfoQube going to cause problems? Are my databases going too get big and load slowly or become unstable?

2) Would it be better to display pdf's in the HTML pane instead (Menu>File>Open)? This isn't as convenient as copy/pasting images directly but it has a nice advantage in that I can mark up the pdf files using a pdf editor I like (PDF Revu). I've tested this and it seems to work well in InfoQube, so far. If I make changes to the original pdf, I repeat the process and the newly edited version appears.

Does using the pdf approach have advantages over pasting images? Would it be less of a load on the database structure?

Hi Wayne,

Pasting image has zero impact on the database as all images are stored in the YourFile.files folder.
Regarding PDF, I'm not very fond of this format..
I would use IQ's clipping feature and select "Save as MHT". It save a copy of the content in a single file (with embedded pictures), it is searchable and allows editing (MS Word, Blocknote)

That helps. Do you not like pdf format in general or specifically related to InfoQube? Does it cause database issues? I'm assuming that InfoQube just displays the file from its source and doesn't incorporate it into the database. From a user standpoint, I'm not fond of MHT because the options for marking up the document are poor compared to what a PDF editior can do (highlighting, adding text callouts and symbols, etc).

I don't like PDF format in general. Nothing related to InfoQube. It is a display format which converts poorly back to a document. Copy -> paste is also really poor.

MS Word doesn't work well for you when editing MHT files ?

I opened an MHT file in Word and it did not go well. All the links on the left sided flashed incessantly like a strobe light every time I scrolled up or down. I tried to create a text box and it created some huge box that I was unable to re-size. That was enough for me. I've tried a number of other mark up programs for research material (Snag It, Adobe Pro, etc) and I thought they were all pretty bad for what I'm trying to do.

With PDF Revu I can do any kind of mark up I want with complete control and confidence, including, for example, text boxes with arrows pointing to passages. I can create any kind of mark up imaginable and save it to a tool bar for future use. I save all web pages to pdf and do all mark ups in PDF Revu. It's a format that people are familiar with, which makes it easy to share work.

Another argument for me is that I don't want to start having to use another program (Word) and another file format (MHT). I already have too many programs and file formats to juggle.

Of course, I'm pretty ignorant about MHT files so I may be off base on this.

In any case, it looks like there's no problem opening many pdf's in InfoQube.

PDF seems the way to go them.

2 things:

You can have multiple HTML panes open, each with a different document. These can be docked or detached (useful when large or multiple monitors
Anything that can be done to help you manage / edit your PDF with IQ ? There is 2 custom buttons to open up MHT editors, should these be enabled for PDF files too ?

(I don't post the specs of my PC, it is soooo old, it is a joke, but heck, it just keeps going ! lol )

I haven't worked with PDF's in InfoQube much at all, so let me get back to you on that later. If you want to add some editing capabilities to InfoQube that would be nice but not critical as far as I'm concerned. I have no problem at all doing the editing in another program as long as I can see the results in InfoQube. I don't like having to click on links to launch files in other programs. I'm sure other people are fine with that, though.

I'll tell you the kinds of mark ups I do when reading an article I've captured for research.

1) By far the most valuable feature to have, to me, is text highlighting (background color). I use a pretty simple system of yellow for key info, and green for extra important. I know academics who use sophisticated schemes of different colors for summary information, to do's, follow up, etc. but I don't do anything like that.

2) The next most important is the ability to add text boxes for comments. In Revu, you can use boxes with arrows so you can point to the passage you're commenting on.

3) Of lesser importance is the ability to insert symbols (eg a star to draw attention to a passage).

I do some other things, too, but these three are the most important to me.

One thing I can think of that would be nice would be the ability to update a pdf file with an icon on the toolbar. Right now, I think the only way to do it is to open the file again through the file menu. A one-step solution would save time.
