Starting Questions

I am about to give IQ another twirl.  I have some memory of it from when I used it several years ago so i should catch up pretty quick.  Like most users, I'll be customizing it heavily to my needs.  It'd be nice to start out with some sample data just because it also includes some grids to get started with.  On the other hand, if I start to use those, do they contain a lot of settings that I'll ultimately have to dig through and adjust/delete etc.?  Any reason not to start with the default grids, or should I just start fresh even though it'll mean more time before I can use it.

Thanks for your thoughts.

IMO, it's much, much easier to start with the sample DB.  Just delete all the items there if you don't want them (it's pretty much the same as the help file and you can always create another sample file just to look at these), but leave all fields, etc.

tools > database management > delete all items .

Then, start from there. It's easy to add fields and stop using others, and/or delete stuff later, once you're sure you won't use them. It's harder to start from scratch, without any field functions, etc.

Customizing IQ isn't that hard, but there can be some hurdles, depending on what you want to achieve (e.g. recurring tasks, automated color formatting, custom dialogs and other stuff that can be achieved with auto-assign equations and field functions). That said, much is achievable; ask questions if you're stuck.
