1. Is it possible to initiate from within the program?  Or do I just need to launch two instances of IQ?
 
2. I assume it is AOK to launch two instances (on the same PC) and work in both windows at the same time?
 
3. I notice that if I right click on a tab there is a "New Window" command, but all that seems to do is open it again in another tab.  Is there a setting somewhere that can be changed so it actually does open a new window?

Say you have one file/one instance of IQ running -
if you open a second file (e.g. from the recent list or via 'open') - the second file will open in a second instance of IQ.

It is okay to have both instances running, and to edit both files. AFAIK you can even have two instances of the one file open - but I havent tried this myself, so maybe someone else could confirm that.

Re #3, when using tab interface, as you say, that "New Window" command will open another copy of the relevant grid - as a new tab.
(Note: there is an option to use windows instead of tabs - tbh I have never used it, I forget where it is, and couldnt find it after a brief search.
 
[edit] that is not like new window as in new instance, but each tab would get its own 'window' within the one instance of IQ. I found the option - it's the very first one in IQ - requires a restart, but, as I say, will not help you in what you seek [/edit])

As Tom pointed out, you can have as many instances of IQ running as you wish. If you have more than one and you use the clipper, a dialog will pop-up to choose which file to clip to.
 
If you open the same file, there is only one issue: Changes made in one file is not reflected in the other. Press F5 to upgrade grids.
 
There are improvements coming along to support multiple copies and real-time collaboration. With that in place, multiple instances should auto-update. I'll keep you posted when this gets implemented.
