following Pierre's advice, I started using the portable version rather than the installed version. In fact uninstalled the installed version just to make sure. However the portable version has just crashed with the following message:

Humm. Seems like a Windows issue:
 
Some say to use CCleaner, other to try under a different Windows account.
I've also seen a solution which involved removing a Windows update:

Pierre, thanks for digging out that info. I'll try some of the things they suggest (short of reinstalling Windows!)
