I use conditional formatting for all items in IQ.  I use a really simple color coding based on stoplights, green means keep going (it's done), yellow is an open item (slow down), and red are high priority/focus open items (stop).  Whenever I launch a grid there is always one item selected, which means I have to move off it to see the color of the item, because otherwise it's for the color of items that are selected.
 
Is there a way to change that behavior so an item is not selected until the user selects it?  Even ignoring my slightly obsessive coloring scheme, it seems to me that when a grid is launched (or switched back to), an item should not be selected unless the user does so.

This is not how DBs or any programs (Outlook, EndNote, Zotero, Word, Chrome, Explorer, Directory Opus...) work In most case : when you come back to the application, the focus/selection is where you left it and ready to go.
It would drastically slow down work flow when you're switching between grids : 1- visually re-spot the right item in the list,  2- reclick on the item you need to edit...  Repeat each time

Pierre, that would work if there was a more transparent selector, unfortunately when I activate that option I have difficulty reading the selected item.
 
Armando, I'm not saying my suggestion was the "right" one, a very good argument can be made for the way it works right now, but FWIW there are in fact many database programs that work the way I am suggesting.

Can you provide a screenshot ? Are you using conditional formatting or Item back color ? Either way, it should be possible to view the item color when the item has focus...

I wasn't commenting about right or wrong, but about the fact that it would be unusual and probably unpractical.
As for the selection transparency, I can see my own colors quite fine (and, like you, I'm a color maniac  -- ask Pierre...); except for the in-cell/characters highlighting. That's a problem as I use highlighting a lot, but it seems that it's some grid limitation...?

I am using conditional formatting to color items.  I then have a unique color selected for "back color of selected items", so that the active item can be differentiated.
 
If I turn on "semi transparent selector", the issue isn't that I can't see the color, it's that the text on the items becomes difficult for me to read, therefore I don't use the setting.  Not impossible to read, but if I'm working on an item and have it selected, it washes out the text.  See attached screenshot with the top half of the items selected.
 
Is there a setting change I should make that I am unaware of?

What if the focus was on a column to the right ?
(which you can keep narrow if needed)

Options 1.2.3
 
I find the same problem (items difficult to read) but I'm using custom colour in that setting.
must have another look on my other machine where it is default

I think that's what I need to get in the habit of doing Pierre, just instantly right click when I got to a thread so I can see the color of all the visible items.
 
Tom, I tried some different background colors, but at least with all the ones I tried, it had no effect on the issue if the text being washed out of semi transparent selector is set to on.
 
If anyone has any more suggestions I'm all ears, otherwise I'll manage :-D, this isn't that big of a deal

In v96g, I added :
  • New: Edit > Unselect All command (Ctrl + Shift + U)
  • New: Grid: Option to turn off highlight of the focused cell

Il like that.
The only problem here is that it seems to be more CPU intensive when moving from item to item, hence less snappy. 

In v97a, this will also help:
  • New: Grid: Option to not automatically select the item when the focus is set to the # column
