I could not find any instructions on how to restore a backup file with the extension of .SNBKA.

Thanks,
John

Hi John

Simply rename the backup file to .SNDB. Backup files are mere copies of IQBases...

I assumed that was the case. But I was not completely sure.

Thanks

My computer crashed. I tried renaming one of the SNBK files to SNDB to restore my data. But the name IQ Base comes up blank without any data or grids.

Thanks,
John

do you mean the 'renamed' there?

There should be two or three backup files -- e.g.
TESTing.SNBK0
TESTing.SNBK1
TESTing.SNBKA

is that the case there?
Note: if I have to restore from these, I move them into a different folder and give them a completely different name (and 'correct' the file extension), so as I dont have to worry about them replacing the original file.

I have the 3 files that you have mentioned backup into a different folder but when I change the .SNBKA to SNDB nothing gets restored. I have blank IQ Base.

Thanks,
John

If the renamed and loaded SNBKA gives you a blank IQ base, it's probably not the right one. Did you compare the size of the backup and the original file? they should be approximately the same.

Look at the path in Options->This File [...] -> Data Storage -> backup folder.
Also make sure that autobackup (above) isn't set to "0".

I have the right folder and the file size is the same as the original. So, I know neither of those is the issue.

Thanks,
John

[/quote]until Pierre chimes in,
the only other thing I can think of is to try and open it with another version of IQ -- either the current version or an older one:
unzip the portable version to a new folder, run that IQ and try to open the backup file with it.

Tom thanks for your help. I have tried opening the backup on two different computers with the same results. So, I guess I will need to wait to see what Pierre has to say.

Hi John,

Strange indeed. The backup files you found were in the same folder as specified in tools >option>this database>storage?

Also, what does file > properties report?

I have my data files in one folder and my backup files in a different folder. But yes I am using a file in my backup folder with the extension of SNBKA and changing the extension to SNDB. And then trying to open it up with IQ. I have tried it on 2 different computers with the same results. I tried opening the new SNDB file in by backup folder as well as moving the file to my data folder and tried opening it there as well. It did not work either way. As far as I can tell the backup is not very useful if it does not work. I am not sure what you are asking about file>properties.

Thanks,
John

H
Does this seems correct for that file ?

If yes, remains to determine why you can't see anything...

It seems correct. I just can't see anything. I have tried changing the extension of SNBKA to SNDB on two different files with the same results.

Which grids did you open?

Create a new grid, erase the source and the filters (Alt+S,  Click on the Grid Menu -> Source  Bar, and erase everything the various text box there), and refresh.

Can you post a screenshot after doing this?

Thanks.

[Edit : Alt+S isn't the default shortcut anymore]

Pierre, I thought of something that I did not try when you told me to go to the source bar. I went to Tools>Manage Grids. And when the window opened up I double clicked on each of my grids and there was all of my data restored.

Thanks,
John

So you were in front of the interface, without any opened grids?

Grids, calendar, maps, etc. are necessary to view the data in the database.

Grids can be opened in various ways.
- Another one is with the View Menu -> grids
- Or with the "omnibox" search text box (type a grid name there, select, press enter/click)

Make sure to check the right option in the "option" dialog. In the "program" section :
Modes -> Restore layout when opening file
Modes -> Show restore layout dialog

 Amando,
Thanks, I did not know about the restore of the modes. There is a lot to learn about IQ and I am still learning.
