Could someone offer tips on how best to use the Doc window?  I've been unable to come up with a system that works for me.

It takes up too much space, even when minimized.  And when I do use it I have to manually expand it to see what's there, then shrink it again when I'm done.

So what I'd like is a set up that:

1) Keeps the Doc pane out of the away (gone altogether, if possible)
2) Alerts me to the fact that an item has info in the Doc pane (icon in item cell?  column checkmark?).
3) Makes it easy to open and close out info in the Doc pane (eg F6 opens a pop-up window even when the pane is closed; and allows you to close it again).

I couldn't find anything in the manual.

Any tips would be appreciated.  Doesn't need to be a full explanation, just an approach that I can try out.  Right now I'm thinking about getting rid of all my Doc material and moving them to external files I can link to.

show field ItemHasHTML in grid. You could background-colour this to make it more visible

When the Doc pane is pinned, F12 will toggle display of same.
You say it takes up too much space when minimised (=pinned, I presume). You could use Shift+F12 to toggle the Pane (open/close) -- problem here is that when you open it, it shifts the other contents of the IQ window -- from this POV, the solution above is better. In my IQ layout, the unpinned Doc pane shows above the Properties pane and rightt-hand part of the grid. I find this okay, YMMV

Yeah, I just found the shift-F12 shortcut.  The manual says the shortcut is F6.  That does a good part of what I want.  I don't mind that the popup takes over the screen.  I just want to look at it then close it.

There's no position for the Doc pane that works for me because if it's big enough to see, it's encroaching too much on the grids.  Could probably do it if I worked in one big window but I almost always have a second program taking up half my screen space (usually a browser).

So now I just need to know which items have Doc info.  Could insert a note in the item (eg [doc], or make a checkmark column.  Checkmark column could be the source for a grid if I ever wanted to see all my Doc info gathered in one spot.

Thanks, I think I've got it.

Hi Wayne,
See start of my last post: display field ItemHasHTML in grid it shows whether content in Doc pane or not (checkmark).

I wonder if doc pane can be made display in a second monitor -- would you consider a second monitor, space-permitting?
All the best, Tom

Yeah, sorry.  Somehow I skipped over your first statement.

Having the option of the Doc pane pop up on the other monitor would be nice because you could just leave it open without interfering with current work.

It's not really a big issue for me because I've started moving towards linking to external files.  But I still have a good bit of material in docs.
