I am stuck at the first stage of getting to even see IQ open in my window laptop.

Believe the Appdata "settings" need to be changed including the Name, ID and Key .

Trouble is when I go to the file explorer and open the said settings it opens up the text file associated with the settings.

I could change that , but cannot save it back into the program file area (lack of permission or something related to that is the error message).

I need advice how to overcome that.

Am not sure if that is all need to do get the program running. The setup instruction at the User Manual does not say anything about this problem I am facing; since maybe most of the presumed users are much more well versed in computer stuff.

Appreciate any advice to get me to next stage of enjoying this program.

Hi Mike,

First a warm welcome to the IQ community forum !

Perhaps try the portable version.
If you do get it to run, after modifying the settings, report back what was the issue.

Thanks and good luck !!

Thanks for the reply. I am using the portable version.

Environment
=========
Windows 10.
HP-spectra-folio laptop.
InfoQube : portable version.
I was away from windows environment for quite a while. Mostly WAS using apples ipad till recently bought an hp-spectra-folio.
Now I still keep my ipad but prefer the larger screen on spetra-folio.

MAIN ISSUE
==========
The thing is how do I change the settings (Appdata-settings) and SAVE the changes in the I believe program area I see saved in my computer.
I said I believe saved in my computer, as I seem to see it with file explorer. (not sure that's the right name).

WISHLIST or could even help solve this current problem of mine:
=================================================
MAWish#1.I wish there was a video showing someone opening the zip file, going into the file-explorer, adjusting the settings, saving it, clicking out, creating the shortcuts, saving the whole thing and finally clicking on launch button and opening up the program.
AND that is just the starters.

Better still> show the problem they encounter > comment on it (in the video)> think aloud to audience > fine tune stuff TILL it works
the PROCESS would help newbies (like me) a lot.

Video 2: start creating some simple notes, tagging them etc.
Video 3: etc  etc.
If there is any such video in existence pse point me out as that would also greatly help.
MAWish#2. I was also looking for a search tool for any of the above for a quick solution but found none.

sincerely

Hi Mike, I'm unable to make a video but will try instructions.

First, I think you might have your portable IQ in one of the program files folders - these folders are read-only, so IQ (or you) would be unable to save settings.

Decide where you want to keep your portable programmes and create a folder for them.
I have mine in folder C:Portable (can be anywhere so long as not program files).
Save IQ zip file in that folder.
Right-click and extract - it will unzip to a folder with the same name as the zip folder (Isomething like InfoQube0.9.114d)
Rename the unzipped folder to 'InfoQube'. This step not necessary, but in my opinion makes it easier to update -- once this working, I can explain how to update.

 Hi Tom, I have followed your step and it worked.

One thing that I had to do slightly different was that I got the zip file into 7-zip app, opened there , changed the 3 items of setting in the AppData folder in 7-zip.
I then copied all files and folders into my external storage newly created folder temporarily called myInfoQube.

Next clicking on the infoQube.exe file opened up the program successfully, I was delighted.
Then I copied the sample file and now am starting to get around the program.

PS: without getting the zip file into 7-zip there was much unsuccessful attempt to save changes to the settings.

Thank you once again.
I am sure likely to come back with some, one might think is basic questions.
I'll search the forum especially following the items you are tracking and also Pierre is tracking would surely
open up much basic issues that I can learn from.

cheers

I'm curious:
How did you know which settings needed to get changed?

 Hi Tom,
in answer to your question. Guess I got lucky that when I clicked on trying to open the settings.ini "file" it opened a text file
in my notpad that had the look of a form that had unpopulated fields especially Name and KEY besides the
ID number.

I recall seeing the KEY sent from Pierre that I thought (correctly) has to be placed somewhere to work the program.

As I said, I was mostly lucky !
I was struggling very much before this with saving that setting.ini file . That was the biggest problem.

MASuggestion#1
=============
Maybe putting the INSTRUCTION  on using 7-zip on the setup notes would be helpful.
I am not sure I used the ordinary unzipping step in windows wrongly or is it only me. If it is
widespread THEN the above suggestion become really needed. imho

cheers

PS: I see you are answering lots of queries, so I assume you are one of "support team" . You don't have to reply if it is correct.
PPS: On reflection I thought it was strange that I read about the "NOT putting the IQetc.zip file into program folder" notes and it just went
through my eyes and out my ears, and never registered in my brain !
