I believe all items are "created equal".  Each item has every field.
If I choose to have various fields displayed, I find it confusing for those items intended to be headings.
I suggest a new "heading" class of item which has no fields (or at least the fields are not displayed).

That would pretty much go against IQ's philosophy where a heading is not a  heading per se, but an item that is used as a heading in specific context...

If the problem is only a visual one, it's possible to use colors, and/or different fonts (most of these can be automated using formulas and conditional formats -- some tricks are explained in the documentation available on the website). That's what I do, and I find it very easy on the eyes.

Not only that but you also have the outline to which the selected item pertains appearing as clickable hyperlinks in the bottom bar of the IQ window.

There might be room for improvement in terms of presentation, but I don't really see how it could be done... Personally , I like to have all fields to be available all the time for any item... Even pure "headings" get special treatments once in a while.... ;)

Armando is correct on this and this is also the philosophy behind Ecco, which IQ is based. To help provide visual feedback, you can:
  • Change the item font (enlarge, bold, etc)
  • Add background color
  • Eventually, you'll be able to merge the item cell with those on the right to make the item appear as a title. It will still be possible to assign values to such heading items through the properties pane, cells left of the item column and auto-assign rules, equations, etc.
