 I have a Notes field in a grid based on the system field called Notes. If I attempt to store a value in the field, it appears for a while in the grid, but shortly afterwards the value disappears from the grid.
 
The properties of the Notes field suggest that values are not stored:
 
 
Numner of items is not available. Notes does not appear as a field in the "All fields" list in the properties pane.

Gee Wiz, having a Notes field with field ID 19 is clearly the problem. Field 19 is reserved for FileTextSize, a number field giving the size of field FileText (ID=18)
Both are used by a relatively new feature: Item > Index linked file
 
This may explain some issues you reported a while back too. That database must be old and modified in an unusual way (and before extra protection was built into IQ)
 
You can try to do a database repair, but I don't think it will fix this kind of issue

Thanks, Pierre, the explanation is appreciated. This file was created in 2016 as a clone of an earlier IQBase which dates back to the dawn of InfoQube history, in those mists of time when the product was called SQLNotes and I was but a stripling. I have nothing of value in the Notes field and can safely cut loose with a new field.
 
Sadly, this brings us to another small problem which I shall report separately...
