Pierre, Here's the situation:

sort on item

1 item in list is a link but the item text begins w letter "J"

following items begin w A,B,C,D etc

sorting does not move link item to proper position between "I" & "K"

Edited 04/15/09 08:54 am: This problem seems to be another one of those weird little things that occur in IQ that are solved by closing & re-opening program. I run into these type problems, ex: shortcuts stop working, sorting, etc quite frequently as don't close IQ at the end of each days work. "Why don't you close IQ @ day's end", someone asked. "Because", I said. " IQ doesn't have a window memory so I have to re-set all my windows, panes, etc which is a PITA". Hint - hint

that's the case with links - the linked items sort first because they sort on the actual text that you see when you go to edit the item AFAIK

You have the same problem if you format the first word in the item field e.g. "<B>test</B>" will come before any items starting with letters when sorted alphabetically.

At times I actually like being able to sort linked items first but mostly not

Tom is correct. Sorting works with the actual item content. So if you item starts with a hyperlink, the item text starts with <a ... and gets placed before anything else.

The column sort does sort on displayed text, so this gives you the best of both worlds:

Sort box sorts on item actual content
Column sort sorts on displayed text

I can see this causing lots of confusion though in the future ...

When I think about it,

sorting by actual text (e.g. link text) will be rarely useful - I find it helpful at times but I'm sorting linked files that are all in the same directory so they sort logically - if they were dispersed over the hard-drive, they would sort according to their file-path which would not be helpful (okay could be helpful to someone but cant see much interest there)

I guess I'm saying I would prefer to see the sort-box sorting by visible text as opposed to "actual" text (anyone else with an opinion on this?)

yes,I have an opinion. I think you make perfect sense. I realize now that I solved my problem not by closing-reopening program but by column sort.
