Thunderbird link opens Outlook

Submitted by viking on 2025/06/16 00:33

I have switched from Outlook to Thunderbird (actually Betterbird) and use an extension that creates links to selected messages. The link looks like this:

thunderlink://messageid=684f0a63aaea3_1234a185110c2@deployment-background-default-857f9f5679-m8…

If I add this link to Office, e.g. Excel, and click on the link, it opens my selected message. However, when I add the link to IQ, and click on the link, it tries to open Outlook.

Comments

I did some more testing and pasting various links in the doc pane. When the messageid link contains x@y.com IQ converts it to a blue link in the doc pane. Such a link opens Outlook!
For example:
thunderlink://messageid=af3029f2-ab6f-47c6-84f4-3923547c981f@gmail.com/

When the messageid link does not contain x@y.com, IQ does not convert it to a blue link, and the link instead opens the intended Thunderbird message!
For example:
thunderlink://messageid=32.A7.09628.1F015586@ccg13mail03/

BTW, I create the links in an item like this "Check this Email {TB Link}" and then use ctrl-k to add the link for {TB Link}
