In an existing grid that you don't care about
in which there is a column filter in effect
right click on the title of a column you want to hide & click hide column
and tell me what happens

Here the item field disappears
If you add a column after that, that column is set as the outline column
it's ugly

Comments

Can you reproduce it with the sample database ?

And if yes, please provide details, as when I tried it here, it works just fine !

It's intermittent but has happened several more times since I first reported & no, I haven't even tried with sample database.

I tried several times but can't reproduce this either.
Maybe there's some other parameter involved but not mentioned in the steps above ?

I have the feeling that it has to do with the "select mode" **
What kind of select mode do you use, Jan ?

I noticed that when "full line" is selected, then effectively remove column will remove the column with the focussed field, independently of the header on which you clicked. Since the focus is probably often in the item column in that mode, this is becomes the disappearing column.

This is probably something that should be fixed anyway.

** Grid menu -> Select mode --> Full-line / multi-columns

full-line.
one other odd note on this. This only occurs when I use hide via right click on column heading
This does not occur if I use add / remove columns dialog
I've also noticed that when I then add the item column again, it is not the outline column, i.e. I have to reset it as the outline column
Does any of this help?

Thanks for you interest.

Yes it does !!!

There were a number of issues with the Full Line mode (which I never use...) Fixed in v0.9.25W6.

Question to all : Do we really need this mode ? Would you be able to do what you currently do if the select mode was fixed to Multi-Column

(IQ has to be made simpler, and this is one of the planned simplifications...)

I never use the Full line. However I understand why some do as certain actions are simpler with the full line. One of them:

- Seeing where you are (vertically) in a large grid. As with multi-columns mode, it's sometimes hard to follow a row from left to right when there are many columns and many rows

If the Full line mode is going to disappear at some point, I wonder if it could be possible to have a better visual indication of the currently selected row(s).

do you mean like a two-tone selected colour - one for the selected field (or for the fully selected item) and a maybe lighter version for the whole line ?

sounds like a very good idea to me.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. Thanks Tom.

Pierre, Thanks for tracking this down.

Just thinking...
If you made column selection an option (in options only) with "simple IQ default" set to multi-column, do you think that would accomplish your goal?
as for visual cue, how about a built in field?
