After sorting when I refresh the items go back to their original positions.
1. Is there anyway to save the positions of the items in a grid?
2. I remember that level-1 items used to be stuck in ther positions, but all sub-items one could rearange. Is this still the case?
Thanks,
Jay

try deselecting:-
menu > Grid > Sort Criteria applies to Sub-items

then sub-items should keep the sort oder that you put them in

EDIT/ you mention 'Save Item State' in another thread - make sure that's on as well - it saves the state of the grid

Nope. Doesn't work. I guess it's not a big deal, at least for now. I can move an item manually and it stays there after refreshing. Still, if this is true it is an issue.

Jay, you say
> I can move an item manually and it stays there after refreshing.

does that not mean it works?

Yes, I can move the item with arrows+alt, but when I use sort in the column, I can't save the order. "Save item state" is on.

Correct. Currently, the column sorting is cleared on every refresh and on grid open. There is no reason why this should be so. The sorting that sticks is the source bar sort. It generally is more feature rich too.

I forgot to say, when you manually sort  items, the numbers in the first column reflect the changed sort - this should even effect TLIs (top-level items) - I think!
If you sort by item column, and then press refresh, it should go back to the manual sort that you have done. (For TLI's, you will have to be sure that the sortbox is empty - otherwise they will sort by that on refresh)
i.e default sort is by the first column unless another sort overrides this (e.g. sortbox)

I dont use this myself, so I'm not sure how permanent it is - try it out see how you get on

BTW some way of saving sorting has been requested

Pierre & Tom -- thanks, I understand what you say. Makes sense.

As in regard to TLI -- yes they change 1st column numbers, but don't stick (go back to original state after refreshing/closing gird).
