You know why this happens, right ? My scratch pane doesn't have hierarchy turned on so they're all immediately exposed, always.

Are you suggesting that hierarchy should be turned off every time the scratch pane opens to show "items with values for a field" ?

Good point, I've added a small dialog when viewing field-values and hierarchy is on:
