Can you see text documents in the HTML pane?
 
I've got adobe pdf files working in HTML pane now but can't seem to make that happen with open office docs even when saved as "doc" file type
 
Any hints?

this is the same problem as with Office - because the problem is actually with IE and not the word processor.
So the reply I gave you from the thread where you talked about MS-Office files is also relevant here (from here).
Disclaimer - I havent tried this- but it was the only answer I could find after a fair bit of searching.

  1. You have to edit the registry

Here is a link for IE 8 - AFAIK you have IE9 but I couldnt find anything specifically for IE9
(A new application window opens when you try to view an Office 2010 document in Internet Explorer 7 or in Internet Explorer 8)
 
It could be the same for IE9 -
but I havent even tried it for IE8 yet, so cannot say much about it...
 
As I said above, this is an MS thing - previously this could be done via GUI, but not since Vista...[/quote]
 
It's hard to understand why MS have made this so hard to change
