When working with projects and gantt charts - Is it possible to assign resources to task within a project so as to be able to see (eg colour change) when resources are inadequate for planned activities.

I'm thinking particularly of the situation when an individual may have several long and medium term projects on the go simultaneously, along with regular daily or weekly tasks - and only so many hours in a day/week/month.

It would be nice to visualise time crunches or potential bottlenecks when planning and monitoring progress.

I think what I want to do is have a way of:

Allocating a resource of x hours week over 6 days Eg up to 12 hours in any 1 day, but not more than 50 hours in any 1 week

Subtracting known commitments eg 4 hours every Wed, 3 hours every 2nd Thurs and 5 hours on any 5th Monday of the month.

Then subtracting known weekly commitments that have to be done, but not on any particular day eg 12 hours on activity1 and 4 hours on activity2 every week

Then subtract the estimated hours for a new project (spread evenly throughout the available resource time left)

The sum of these new projects (could be 3-8 of them at once) will consume hourly resources

Which will then indicate (maybe a colour change in a gantt bar) when resources are greater than 90% available for any given week

Is this sort of thing possible in infoqube - or am I just dreaming?

No, you are not dreaming, but it isn't quite implemented yet. This is what is coming soon:

As you can see, the graph at the bottom shown the individual's work load and turns red when 100% is exceeded.

While we are on the topic of gantt charts.

When I have allitems open and looking at my Projects grid, I have a gantt chart which has a min/hr/day/10d/mo/3mo selector - very handy for changing the scale.

When I shift to my ToDo grid and open the gantt chart, there is no selector - and I can't find where to configure the gantt chart to change that (or anything else about the gantt chart)

Can someone point me to instructions for that?

Also, the gantt chart above shows links to an excel file and Word document - is this currently available or is it in the pipeline like the resource graph?

In Grid>>Properties>Gantt, you can use Show Overview and Show Overview Zoom buttons

In the pipeline...

Now that I am back to using Gantt charts again it seems as though some functionality has been lost in the last release (or two or three - not sure when).

It doesnt' seem possible to click on a gantt bar, hesitate, then drag to another bar and create a link. Long hesitation, no hesitation - it just doesn't seem to work anymore.

Has there been a change I am unaware of - another command, keystroke etc, or is it a bug?

My mistake. I disabled it and forgot to re-enable it. The issue is that I find it difficult to move bars when it is enabled. It always wants to link. You must be very careful to select the bar in the middle and move left or right, etc...

Right now, to link, you press the Shift when you first click on a bar:

Press Shift
Click on the first bar
Let go Shift (if you hold the Shift key too long, if stops linking)
Drag to the second bar

I'll remind the grid supplier of this issue. In the meantime, in Pre-Rel4, I'll add a menu to toggle the behaviour

It should work, I've just tried it. My explanations were not clear however, try:

Press Shift
Click on the first bar
Start to move and then let go Shift (if you hold the Shift key too long, if stops linking)
Drag to the second bar

I should be releasing a new version by the end of the week which should make this easier. I'll add a Gantt specific toolbar

I think I have tried all possible combinations of where in the bar to click, how long to hold Shift before moving, horizontal or vertical first - but still nothing.

Probably best I wait until the next version and try again then - I'll let you know if still a problem.

PS - I eagerly await the implementation of the "overload" indicater and the doc and xls attachments to the links etc as per the animated display.

The overload is already enabled

Another quety about Gantt charts.

I understand how to mark certain days of the week or hours of the day as non usable.

Is there a way of forcing them not to show on the Gantt chart at all?

I'm especially thinking of a situation where a project runs over 3-4 days into the evenings. I want to be able to show the hours which will be active across the 4 days, without the 7 or 8 hours in the night showing as greyed out columns. The luxury of twin screens allows several days to be visible at once, if I can eliminate unused hours.

The Gantt currently has a bug... If I enable this feature, it locks up. Supplier was notified
