In grid settings if user has
Grid > Hierarchy > Full
wouldn't user be able to see the full hierarchy of that item, i.e. parents, grand parents, etc.

Contacts or Address Book Grid
XYZ company, tel # , cel #, contact
2010/12/22 Sue sez shipment on its way out the door
XYZ shipment is due on Oct 4th (this item is marked with due date 10/04/2010

This is what I see in Due Date Grid
2010/12/22 Sue sez shipment on its way out the door
XYZ shipment is due on Oct 4th (this item is marked with due date 10/04/2010)

This is what I'd like to see in Due Date Grid
XYZ company, tel # , cel #, contact
2010/12/22 Sue sez shipment on its way out the door
XYZ shipment is due on Oct 4th (this item is marked with due date 10/04/2010

I feel like this is an old topic, one that I should understand already but I don't.

Comments

You say it's an old topic, but it's actually the first time I see this question/comment. Maybe it's jut the way it,s formulated. But I'm afraid your example doesn't say enough about sources, filters, etc. for me to understand fully what you mean. I wonder why you'd want parents, grand parents of TLIs to be shown in the grid...? ... This would make it extremely hard to start a hierarchy at a given level, and that's what the filters and source are there for. Full hierarchy's use is to show all subs regardless of if they meet the source or not -- not to show all parents and grand parents. Potential solutions : In your example, if you turn "context parent" on, you might see the "XYZ company, tel # , cel #, contact", unless it's not the main parent and "2010/12/22 Sue sez shipment on its way out the door" has multiple parents. The properties pane is also convenient to look at an items parent, and you can climb as high as you want in the hierarchy.

I think there was talk (or suggestions at least) at some stage to have context parents showing grandparents (?)

FWIW,
what I do in some grids is show the ItemParent field - this will show the parent of the context parent so you have two extra 'levels' there by simply turning context parents on.

You know what's interesting, Tom, if I look @ ItemParent field (a good idea) it does show the ultimate parent in the hierarchy, i.e. XYZ company  which is what I'm interested in.
But if I click on "XYZ" nothing happens

However, If I look @ the "Parents" field it shows the following:
"2010/12/22 Sue sez shipment on its way out the door"
which is the immediate parent but it indicates there is a sub-item present

If I click on the immediate parent, it reveals the grandparent, i.e.
XYZ company, tel # , cel #, contact
which is what
and
if I click on "XYZ" IQ opens a scrap grid which gives me the tel #, etc in the property window
problem solved.

And yes, there was a discussion about seeing a grandparent once upon a time.

This was in relation to "Show context parent" though, not full hierarchy. It's a bit different.
