To be able to see the problems visually, I've compared IQ to OpenProject in the video below.

IQ supports both fixed and variable dependancies. Do Gantt >> Adjustable Next Task Delay and it should work as in OpenProject
 
If the command name is not clear, I'm open to suggestions

Wow! It was that simple to fix my problem.
 
I had no idea there was anything called fixed task dependencies. I would never have found Adjustable Next Task Delay without your help. And, even if I saw it on my own, I would have had no idea what it meant. And without developing my own help system to remember this in the future, I will forget and go down the tubes later when I try to set up a new project grid.
 
Maybe the default mode should be set to Adjustable Next Task Delay. That seems like the norm. Then the sophisticated, advanced user could change the mode to fixed mode if s/he desires.
