Is this possible? If not, will it become possible in the future?  I believe the gui allows for this.

You can have as many tab groups as you wish, but they must be all vertical or all horizontal...  right-click on tab to create

Yes, I didn't word my question right.  I'm aware of the above. I'd like to be able to create a mix of verticle & horizontal, i.e. ability to split horizontal in half, same for verticle. I frequently find myself wasting a lot of window space & could make better use of my desktop.
 
For example, in UltraRecall, I have 7 windows showing various related data & very little scrolling is necessary.

Yes, this kind of combo view is planned (the UI elements I use are quite capable of doing this)

Do you have any sense of when this improvement will be forthcoming? It would be a very practical improvement.
