How can user copy an item w associated html data to be pasted back as a new item. in IQ?

I know I can <CTRL>+drag/drop but this creates a clone, i.e. update one, the other gets updated. That's not what I want.

I dont think this is possible
Option somewhere to Duplicate an item would be great all right

Currently you can copy item fields and html seperately to a new item

The steps are:
  1. Select the item
  2. Edit > Copy > XML format
  3. Edit > Paste
  4. Grid > Refresh (may be required)

Pierre, thanks.

That works however IQ seems to take its grid assignment from whatever is left over from the last copy. And since the dialog does not permit new assignment, the item has to be searched for / found in another grid (like scratch / all items)

Yes, this procedure clones the item. All field values are identical.

Pierre, I think I'm not explaining myself correctly & now you have me confused with the terms you are using.

1. To me,
clone = dynamic copy, i.e. update one, updates the other versions
copy = non-dynamic copy, i.e. update one does not update the other versions

2. If this method copies all field assignments, then it would have shown up after refresh in the grid where I pasted it. This did not happen.

I don't doubt you but it's not working here as expected.

not answering for Pierre
but just wanted to say, I - and others- used the word "clone" incorrectly in the past for giving an item a new parent item - as you know this means the item is showing twice but it's just the one item (i.e. as you say Jan, >dynamic copy, i.e. update one, updates the other versions<

As Tom wrote, and in real life, a clone is an exact copy of an item, but it is a different individual. In IQ you can:
  1. Create multiple links between items, so the same item can appear under many parents, in multiple grids, etc. But it is the same item (same ID)
  2. Copy selected item values and paste to create a new item with those selected values (edit > copy > tab-delimited)
  3. Copy the whole item (i.e. clone it) to create a new item with exactly the same values. It is a distinct item

Sorry, still confused. This thread is drifting.

My original dilemma was copying an item, it's assignments & it's html content. When I followed your steps, i.e. copy and paste xml, the item did not retain the same field assignments.

To put it another way.
grid xyz = writing project, source = [writing project]
In grid xyz, I copied item with html content <ctrol>+c
I pasted item w html content into grid xyz, <ctrl>+v

The item did not appear in grid xyz. Instead I found it by searching thru all items in scratch pad & then had to assign it to "writing project" that appears in grid xyz.. IQ did not pick up all the field assignments. I believe it copied field assignments from the last field assignments in the <ctrl>+n dialog cache.

It works here. Are you sure that the original item had the field value for [writing project] (and was not simply a sub-item of an item which did) ?

Please compare the field values (properties pane > filled fields) between the two items

The fields are the same for both items. I guess I'm doing something wrong but I can't figure it out.

As an aside, after copy, exactly what do you do to insert the copy. Plse be specific, like where do  you put the cursor.  On paste does IQ create a sibling or a child. I'm asking because I'm getting duplicates & I don't know where they are coming from. I know this last sentence is clear as mud but do tell me how  you paste. That may answer my problem here. Selecting is very delicate in IQ. If  you click in the wrong place you end up in edit mode, etc.  User seems to have to click on the ecco dot in order to select w/o opening the item to edit unless there is some setting I can change, I find this very frustrating. Thanks.

1- select full "line" (item--> select item, or just click on the # field/column)
2- ctrl-c (choose tab format, or xml...)
3- create a new item, select full line
4- paste.

Now, in at least one case, that won't work.

E.g. :  if you modified the order of columns between the copying and pasting process (or something like that), it won't work properly.
I suggest you close the grid and reload it (that seems like a bug, Pierre).

If you use tab-delimited copy, the order of the columns must not be changed (same with Excel, or Access). For XML format, it does not matter

It didn't work for me & I didn't re-order anything so I don't know what to say here. Besides that, sometimes I get more than one copy of the copied item in the grid @ different levels.

Jan,
I would try it out in a sample grid with only a few items
First,
check your grid settings i.e. hierarchy, context parents
Keep good track of exactly what you do and see what happens

EDIT/
I would recommend doing it with
  • Context Parents OFF
  • and both Hierarchy settings ON
You can then change these settings & see are they the cause of something showing up twice in a grid

If something shows up unexpectedly in a grid - check
  • is it a context parent (Blue)
  • have a look at it's parentage in the properties pane & compare with the other copy(s) to figure out is it the same item or easier still look at the itemID field - but looking at the parentage can help you figure out why it's showing twice

Best would be for you to record what you do and post it here. There are a number of free screen recorder programs out there

"Wink" is the easiest screen recorder  to quickly learn (and it's free).
