So earlier today I had an important one hour discussion, with my accountant no less.  I entered an item in IQ about the call and made a ton of notes in the HTML pane.  Closed IQ and shut off the PC.  Tonight I boot up and open IQ and the item is.....nowhere to be found.  I've checked and doublechecked to make sure there are no filters or hoists engaged that would be hiding the info.  Why would this happen???

UPDATE: I decided to perform a search to make sure I didn't enter it in a different grid than I thought I did.  When I searched for it, it instantly appeared with "shown in" listing the exact grid I looked in 10 times.  So I go back to the grid and there it is!  There is NO way I missed it previously.  I literally used the up/down keys and searched back and forth over every item in the grid 5 times just to make sure I had not typed in an HTML pane on some other item, before finally resorting to the search.  It's also a top level item.  So why would the item disappear from view and only show back up with a search???

Thanks

Hi David,

Sorry you've had problems.

Unless something's severely broken in IQ -- which I doubt since everything is ok here and I use it about 8-10h/day -- it was probably :
1- a filter "problem" (hoist, source bar filters, column filters, whatever...),
3- a display mode "problem" (hierarchy vs flat : hierarchy will normally hide TLIs that appear under other TLIs displayed in the grid... as expected)
2- a grid refresh "problem".

I know you said it wasn't filter related or anything, but there's no other reason why an item wouldn't show except for these 3 reasons.**

But you also said this happened after opening IQ, so... I don't know.
What you described (TLI disappearing for no reasons) never happened to me in 7 years. Weird things happening to TLIs were always filter/refresh related.
At one point (2013) something affected how filters worked in huge databases (500+MB), but that got fixed.

If that can reassure you : I haven't lost one item in years. To be 100% honest/clear, I did run into problems from time to time (last time in 2013 I think) and thought that my DB was corrupt... but we found that it was some other issue.

If something weird happens, I'll report back.

**Generally speaking, until Pierre automates every single refresh events (the problem is that all those hit performance... so it's not always a good idea to automate all of these), press F5 if you made changes somewhere and start working in a "new" grid.

I've occasionally have weird things happen with IQ - often just after starting it.
I've not had that particular problem, but refresh would certainly be my first port of call (it's not that long since refresh always had to be done manually), then maybe reopen the grid.
Taking screenshots en route can be helpful for figuring out things afterwards.

If an item is missing, and you know when it was created, another way of checking it's existence is using the Journal grid with the date-filter.

Thank guys, good to know you have not experienced it as an issue.  I was much relieved that it was still there and just not showing up for some reason.  Some other things:

  • Refresh was actually the first thing I tried, and several times after.
  • Then I checked for filters and hoists.
  • There was actually something hoisted on the page when I entered it as a top level item and it was at the same level.  So initially I thought that was why I wasn't seeing it, that once I closed it probably disappeared since it was not part of the hoisted area, if that makes any sense, so I unhoisted after reopening.  But I till couldn't find it.  I'm wondering if maybe entering it as a TLI next to a hoisted item is that caused it to disappear and the search somehow made it appear again?
Of course it's also possible I am losing my mind and it was always there ;).  By like I said, I literally keyed up/down through every item looking for it.

Well, let's keep our eyes (and screenshot tool...) open and if it happens again, we might be able to figure out the issue.

>I'm wondering if maybe entering it as a TLI next to a hoisted item is that caused it to disappear and the search somehow made it appear again?

Maybe... But hoisting doesn't change the way the grid relates to items created as TLIs. Once you "unhoist", those items should still appear as TLIs, but they might also not appear where you expected them, depending on the sorting options, etc.

The search grid's hyperlinks doesn't have the power to add fields to an item so it's unrelated -- afaik

Hi David,

Doing some test did not reveal a possible cause. However, I noticed that the Hoist list is not updated when adding a TLI and closing the grid (that is, without unhoisting before closing the grid). I'll fix this in the next release.
Steps to reproduce are:
  1. Hoist some items
  2. Add a TLI SomeItem1
  3. Close the grid
  4. Re-open the grid: the item SomeItem1 is not shown in the grid
  5. Unhoist: Item SomeItem1 is now shown in the grid
HTH

But is that really a bug ?
If I hoist an item, should I expect IQ to add newly created TLIs to the hoist list ? Maybe... but I'm not sure.
That said there are other situations where the hoist list changes and it shouldn't : IIRC, if create subitems meeting the source, they will appear as TLIs in the hoist list. Or something like that. I'll try tomorrow.

I would think so. Also, for consistency, closing the grid and switching hoist off should result in the same hoist list.
