On the lower left of IQ there is text that shows the lineage of whatever the currently selected item is.  Is it possible to create a field that could display the lineage info in a column?  I would personally find that beyond invaluable.

Thanks

  1. Would you want straight text or with the same hyperlinks you have on the status bar ?
  2. Would you want the lineage as displayed in the grid or using actual parents ?

1. Both would be great but a hyperlink would be even better.  However I notice that currently the hyperlink on the lower left only works when the parent item is displayed in the same grid.  I assume it would work the same, since obviously it could be in multiple grids.

2. Not sure I follow but I think the answer is showing actual parents.  The use case is let's say I am in a grid that is set so that I don't see the parent item.  It would be incredibly useful if right there in a column I could see the lineage.  How that would work with items that have multiple parents I do not know though.

Also, ideally if I hovered over the column I would see all the info, since I'd not want to have to make a super wide column eat up the screen.

Thanks

This was my second point. Right now, for performance sake, the lineage shown on the status bar is a copy of what is displayed on the grid. So, for example, if you hoist an item, the parents are not shown on the lineage.

Just to clarify, at least for me, the entire value of it would be to be able to see the parent, in a grid where the parent is not shown.  There are some grids where I want a "flat" view that does not show hierarchy, and to have a column that would show the lineage would allow me to instantly see the context of the item.  But again, I don't know how that would work for an item with multiple parents?

Do you think this is feasible?  How would it work for items with multiple parents?

If you want, you can already use the ItemParent and ItemGParent fields
