I ran into a problem while adding and editing items in a Grid. The whole problem was that I was in Auto-Search mode for that particular grid and didn't realiize it.

If I pressed Enter to start a new item, a new sibling item would be created, but then the cursor would immediately jump to an item higher in the grid and the character "(" (open parenthesis) would be highlighted - as if I had been using the Auto-Search function to search for the character "(".

If I pressed Space to move cursor to the end of the item for editing, nothing would happen.

F2 did open the item for editing.

In this manner I actually did add and edit many items, even with Auto-Search turned on. I just thought I had encountered some bug, rather than the normal operation of Auto-Search.

I am just wondering whether something could be done to alert the unsuspecting user that Auto-Search is the reason these keystrokes aren't behaving normally.

Actually I wonder if it would be better to replace Auto-Search with an explicit "search in grid" box like Ecco has. The search dialog on top would of course make it clear that the user is in "search in grid" mode.

I'm not a big user of auto-search and open to suggestions...

Others may want to chip in, but auto-search could be a regular command not a grid state

(So you click it each time you want to do the search)

I wonder what other people think about it ... but it could be something as simple as a little pop up indicator to show that the user is in Auto-Search mode - to remind somebody like me who didn't realize it. It would be a reminder to turn off auto-search before trying to edit and navigate in the normal way.

I mentioned that problem a few year ago and suggested that the column/column border could appear with a different Color, or a "thicker bold" (right now the border is a bit thicker, but not enough to be really clear). But I think Pierre told me it wasn't possible

I was thinking of a little box that floats over the top of the grid that says "Auto-Search Mode".

I always liked the Ecco Find dialog that would popup with Ctrl+F. It's always clear you're in a Find mode. But of course IQ and Ecco are very different programs and a different solution might be better for IQ.

Change: Grid: Auto-Search is now a command, not a grid state. It auto-disables itself after 5 seconds of keyboard inactivity or by pressing ESC or the keyboard shortcut (default is CTRL + F3)
