I have no idea what I've done. I consider myself an IQ newbie but have some "ease" with the basics of the program. I have about 20 grids going. On one I have lost the ability to see any of the columns excepting the number column. My other grids work fine. I can add & remove columns easily. I have tried all the ways I know how to restore the column visibility with no effect. Even the Item column will not display. When I look in the Properties Pane, all the info is there.

I'm clueless as to how to resolve this. I'm sure someone can tell what to do to fix it.

It's so mysterious to me I'm anxious to hear what it is. (-:

Also , I have not been able to get the line number column to display in some grids Or to separate it from the Item column (when it's set as the Tree Column).

I tend to approach these kind of things like I would with Windows:

# try closing / reopening grid

# try closing / reopening file

another, possibly more helpful suggestion, is:

menu: Tools >Database Management >Repair

I've never had a problem with repair, but to be on the safe side, make sure you have a backup of the database first.

There may be other better solutions, but these are a good start...

the first column with the '#' symbol in header:

this can be hidden (and re-shown) by dragging from the right-hand side of it's column header.

I suspect that's the problem / solution (?)

it is not a moveable column - you can show it or hide it - that 's all.

My columns are restored! Whew! Glad to have them back.

It was odd though. The number column didn't have row numbers in it but instead the ItemID number. So I closed the grid & re-opened and all was good. Strange.

Not sure what to make of all this. Except to keep plugging ahead with the program and trust it will all be good. I am inspired by all the people who have invested so much from the sidelines for so many years.

I can see in the grids that have the number column separate that I can't make it disappear completely. It's always there to catch and make wider when I want to see it.

When I have a grid that hast the line numbers in the Item column. I want to separate the numbers from the Items. It must be possible as I have grids that way now.

I tried dragging from the 'right' side of the column header. Nothing. Just moves the column or if I catch it on the column edge it changes the column width. I tried it on the left side and it just moves the column.

I feel I must be missing something otherwise I wouldn't have grids with the line number column separate from the item column.

Any hints on how to do this?

could you post a screenshot - or describe more exactly the difference between the two types of grids (or confirm the description/difference)

Thanks for helping me out with this.

To get my columns back I did as you suggested. I didn't hold back, I closed the grids then closed the program. When I opened the app and then the grid back up, Voila! It was all there. That was a good feeling.

Regarding the numbers thing, I've attached a PDF with a couple of screenshots. I hope they make it clear. I have limited the screenshots scope to keep some data private.

The shot on the left, labeled "Item & Row Number Column Separate" Is what I'm after. Most of my grids are this way and I would like them all to be like that. Separate columns for Row Number and for Items.

The shot on the right, labeled "Item Column has Row Numbers." is what I want to change so it looks like the shot on the left

I have not found how to separate the numbers from the Item column and I don't know how I did it on many of the grids I have in use. More mystery.

It was probably a rare bug. I've seen weird things like that in the past, occasionally. But it's very very rare (IQ is my main working environment -- several hours a day).

That's a specific Grid option : Tools>Manage Grids> select your grid in the manage grids dialog, and in the view section on the grid options youll see Tree column shows outline label

It's a fairly new option.

[EDIT : you'll need to close ans reopen the affected grid for the option to be effective]

Jeesh! How would I have known? Your guidance is much appreciated.

It's really a big deal to trust all the important details of your life to an application. I feel more able to trust IQ is the right choice because of your help. The bugginess that shows up occasionally is something that can be dealt with. I have tried IQ a couple of times over the last 4 years and given up on it at least twice, after concerted effort to learn it and work through the challenges. I think I'm here to stay now. That's a good feeling. I am sure I will be calling out for help before long. (-:

Quicker is to use Grid > Labels on the Tree column menu item. No need to refresh the grid to see the changes.

FYI, if the tree column shows the numbering labels, the # column is in fact hidden.
