I'm trying to clean up a file that has lots of unwanted items. Twice I've gone thru, deleted hundreds of items and all their subitems, only to have InfoQube crash. When I bring the file back up, all the items I erased have been restored.

No idea why it's crashing but it'd be nice to have a save command to prevent loss of work like this. I guess I should just be using "save as" and overwriting the existing file. Is that the best approach?

Follow up: I just can't erase items. Every time I try, IQ crashes partway through the process. I'm using the latest release (downloaded yesterday).

Follow up-2: I'm also losing the clean up I did on fields. I deleted fields quite a few minutes before the crash but those are all being restored, too. How often does IQ save and why isn't it saving my changes?

Hi Wayne,

A crash ? This is rare. If you can reproduce it in the sample database, then I'll be able to fix it quickly. Otherwise, please provide as much information as possible and I'll look into it.

Couldn't Wayne's items be locked? (@Wayne : all items can be locked with the "locked" option through the properties pane or the item menu -- could they be locked?)

What's being described never happened to me, except when items were locked.

[Edit : the reason why I don't see how it can happen unless items are locked : there's no such thing as "saving" the dB to save items state : all changes to items are immediately committed ]

I checked: the items weren't locked. This last time it crashed as soon as I selected the items. I get the "InfoQube has stopped working" message.

I just re-booted the computer. Maybe that was it. Haven't trouble with any other programs. I just went back and deleted the items without another crash.

Crash when deleting items is not something I remember seeing...

Please report back if it happens again.

I'll look into the code to see if I can see a possible cause.

I know just enough to be dangerous. I thought I was deleting items I didn't need but apparently ended up deleting all my new work, too. Thankfully it was all preserved in the backups.

Sorry for the dumb question but I seem to have forgotten much of what I once knew. I'm trying to organize notes in the grid view with multiple columns to show sources, subject categories, etc. Should I be using the "item" field for my primay organizing unit (in this case, the person being interviewed)? Or does it matter? I started out ignoring the "item" field and creating all new fields for what I want to do.

In just about all situations, it is best to use the item field as the main text field and to show the hierarchy.

I did as you suggested. I've made "Item" my main text field located at the extreme left of my grid. However, when I create a subitem, it does not use the "Item" column as the parent, it uses the adjacent text column I created. Instead of the outline tick box being on the left side of the first column, its on the left side of the second column and the subitem is not indented from the parent item.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi Wayne,

right-click the column header for the Item field, and make sure 'Set as Tree Column' is selected:

that should work then (for that grid)
