This is a follow up to an earlier thread about displaying PDF's:  http://www.sqlnotes.net/drupal5/index.php?q=node/3032

In that thread, Pierre said:
"Drag-drop of PDF documents was never implemented. In the HTML pane, the way to do it is simply File > Open and point to the PDF file.

This feature relies on 2 components:
  1. Internet Explorer handling embedded documents
  2. Having an embeddable PDF viewer. Adobe reader works for this"
I tested it at the time and it worked fine.  I just tried it again and nothing happens.  The HTML pane remains blank when I try to open the PDF.

Maybe the problem lies in the two conditions Pierre listed.  I have several PDF viewers.  I don't what it means to have Internet Explorer handling embedded documents.  Is this a setting in InfoQube.  I couldn't find anything in options.  I launched Internet Explorer and had it running but that didn't help.

I found this in the Help file:

  • Display different file type content (and in certain case, edit them :  *.aspx *.EML. *.PDF. *.DOC. *.XLS
    • Note that in certain cases, if “Browse in same window“ is disabled in Windows Explorer, this won't work. You need to enable that feature. To do that, follow these steps (example is for MS Word, windows XP):
      1. Launch Windows Explorer.
      2. Select “Folder Options...“ from the Tools menu.
      3. Select the “File Types“ tab.
      4. Scroll down the list of “Registered file types“ until you find “DOC - Microsoft Word Document“ and select it.
      5. Click on the “Advanced...“ button at the bottom of the dialog.
      6. Check the “Browse in same window“ checkbox.

I went to Windows Explorer Tools and opened Folder Options.  There is no tab for "File Types" in the Windows 7 version of Explorer.  Another dead end.

Hi Wayne,

Please supply the OS version and Internet Explorer version. MS has the bad habit of changing menus with each version...
Can IE open the PDF and display it inside its own window ?

Of course, you may want to search the web for something like: view pdf inside internet explorer
This is what I got, after a quick search:

OK, then that is not the issue...

Part of the rework I'm working on in the HTML pane involves fixing local file handling and the ability of the HTML pane to display local HTM and other files. Just wait a few days till I release the new version

I decided to resurrect the topic here to provide some continuity for this issue.  Note that it was discussed in the thread announcing rel. 63.  This release was partly intended to fix problems with the HTML pane display.  I noted on that thread that I still couldn't display PDF's, nor any of the other document types (htm, doc, Excel)   Pierre suggested a number of things to try but none of them worked.  See: www.sqlnotes.net/drupal5/index.php

The conclusion was that it just wasn't going to work on my system.  I've spent today thinking about it off and on.  At one point, Pierre suggested it could be a path problem.  That would explain why it affects all document types.  Earlier, I had a path problem with getting images to display correctly.

I decided to move a PDF file into the same folder as InfoQube...and it works!  I can finally see a PDF displayed in the HTML pane.  Is this a requirement for InfoQube?  Does the file have to be in the same folder?  I don't recall that ever being suggested.  At the least, it's progress.

that *is* a start!
and no -- same folder should not be a requirement.

I'm on Win.7 x64 -- and PDF's display no problem in HTML pane.
My IE is not as up to date as yours - I will do a windows update (I see one security update for IE) and report back.
Adobe Reader is 11.0.13 on this machine (and is default PDF handler -- but on my desktop I was using PDFXchange viewer as default and was no problem).

FWIW I have had a lot of problems on my desktop with PDF's -- the file association was not quite right. The files opened okay on double-click, but when a third party software (including some browsers) tried to open a PDF, it would launch Windows Media Player. But if PDF files open for you in IE, I guess this irrelevant...

Great news... and as Tom said, it is not  a requirement.

Simply report back the path of the file which does not work, I'll test it here and issue quick fix

Pierre,

I'm not sure what you mean.  I have thousands of files that don't work.  The only file that will work is the one I put in the same folder as InfoQube.

I seem to have some kind of systematic path finding problem.  I'm still having the same image problems I had on previous releases.  Images will sometimes not display.  Just had two cases in a row where pasted images display as a black box.  It works, then it doesn't work, then it works again.

Update: After another reboot, it's now recognizing PDF's on the same drive as the IQDB (not just in the same folder).  Still won't recognize anything on any other drive.

In v63, after installing Acrobat Reader 10.1.4 (smaller install than the current version, make sure you uncheck the junk Adobe wants you to install)
The HTML pane is able to view PDF files.

I meant the previous post to go to the end of the thread (see 2nd post above).  I have a quick update:  .htm files are also opening correctly now, but only if they're in the same folder as InfoQube.

I haven't been able to .DOC files to open.  I'm given only the choice to "open" or "save" the file.  If I select "Open", it's opened externally in Word.  I think I have to adjust the path in options for this.
