Hi Pierre,
 
after using IQ for a couple of days, I hate to say I am experimenting some sort of bug.

Sometimes, when I mark an item or multiple items and accidentally move them with the mouse to a different position, they just disappear. I can only find them again by entering the names of the items in the search field. There they show up without any grid shown in.
 
This has happened at least 2 times now, so I am sure it is a bug.
 
The first item of those items that disappeared referred endlessly to itself: The parent of the item was the item itself and so on. Maybe this helps.
 
By the way: How can I see all items which are shown in no grid? Is there a filter which I can set to see all orphan items without grid?

  1. Interesting. An item "normally" cannot be the parent of itself, nor would it be of any use. I'll try to recreate such a situation and close that loop hole.
     
  2. The concept of Orphans does not really exist in IQ. Things to remember:
    1. Items live "inside" the cube, the IQBase and YOU choose which ones are shown on the cube's faces.
    2. There are many UI to show items on cube faces, grids are just one of them.
    3. Grids and other UIs can display any item whatsoever.
    4. In particular, the Journal grid can be used to show any items, typically based on when they were created or modified.

With regard to 2.:
 
a) In some cases, I would like to access the "shown in" information I can see in the properties pane. How can I quickly analyze which items are not shown in any grids? Can I make the "shown in" information a column or can I access this info elsewhere?
 
b) How do I get the journal grid? I now it is in the sample IQBase but I created a new IQBase, so it is not yet there.

  1. The "shown-in" isn't available as a column in a grid. It is however available in the live-search window. A word of caution: Since grids can be filtered, and items expanded/collapsed, the "Shown in" reflect this and is of a rather relative use. I don't use it much
  2. The Journal grid is simply a grid with no source or filter but with an Alpha-numeric filter with these settings: ItemCreated, =, and with "Show Done" checked. You can check a sample IQBase to see how it is setup

Do I understand correctly that "shown in" only shows the items which are currently visible? How do I check then whether an item is part of a grid respectively which grids an item is part of?

Yes, that's approximately true. When a grid is saved or closed, the list of items is updated.

I think you may be missing the point... items are not part of a grid. Grids are dynamic in nature. I guess the question really is: "Why do you think you need to know in which grid an item is shown ? "

Regarding your "why" question:
If I accidentally remove the only parent of an item which has several sub-items, this item group will no longer have any parent nor will it show in any grid. Right?
 
How do I easily recognize those items which are still in the database but not shown anymore?

No, that is not the case. Sub-items can have any number of field-values and hence be shown in other grids.
Also, the one field-value most items have is the "item" text field-value. 
 
It is true that an item which has no field-values, including no item text would be difficult to find. But then again, it does not contain any information either. Even then, it will still be visible in the Journal grid because it will have an ItemCreated date and an IDItem value. 
 
One last thing about the original subject, Orphans... IQ items are like you and me, individuals. Having lost both my parents, I'm an orphan, but doesn't stop me from participating in all sorts of activity. Same for IQ items. In the end, we'll all be orphans, one day or another, same for our children. This is one reason that IQ supports the display or not of context parents... because having parents or not is not always, not even often, a key parameter of an item. it has a life of its own, independent of its parents. Just my 2 cents !
